Overview: 2011 Chevrolet Volt More on the Volt: http://www.myride.com/snacker-environment/2011_chevy_volt_everything_you_want_know-649-page1.html The 2011 Chevrolet Volt represents a direction for GM, and maybe you guessed by the name, one that is focused on electricity. In fact, although technically a hybrid, the Chevy Volt uses only electric power to move the wheels. For trips up to 40 miles, the Volt is powered by electricity stored in its lithium-ion battery. When the battery's energy is depleted, a gasoline/E85-powered engine works as a electrical generator to provide power the Volt's electric drive unit. 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC Gullwing Spy Shots GET AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT THE GULLWING: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=131606?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..3.* Now that we've seen the doors in action, we're comfortable calling this new coupe the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC Gullwing. It's not likely to carry such a clumsy name into production, but it might as well, because the doors are the story here. An obvious homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL produced from 1955-'63 (just 1,400 gullwing coupes were built), this new coupe will combine unique styling with supercar performance. We've seen these prototypes of the SLC Gullwing before on the Nürburgring, but now we've got some even more revealing footage from Death Valley. Most of the more ridiculous camouflage is gone, revealing a still-bulbous nose but more shapely bodywork further back. It's pretty clear that the defining feature of this car will be its gullwing doors, although up until this point we hadn't yet seen them in action. Some clever camouflage around the B-pillar disguises the rear window line, which actually slopes down far more aggressively into the short trunk section. Although the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series will use a twin-turbo V12, the SLC will most likely get a turbocharged V8 with similar horsepower. A fortified version of Mercedes' new MCT seven-speed automatic is the most likely transmission. With production of the SL65 AMG Black Series still several months off, the introduction of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC is still at least a year away. This puts its start of production sometime in 2010. That should be soon enough to fill the gap left by the soon-to-be-departed SLR, yet far enough out to let any bad taste left by the failed McLaren/Mercedes collaboration fade away. NSX Unleashed: 2011 Acura NSX Finally Hits the Nürburgring FOR MORE ABOUT THE ACURA NSX SPY VIDEO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=127446?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* The latest prototype of the 2011 Acura NSX has finally hit the Nürburgring and it's looking — and sounding — better than ever. Unlike the previous prototypes — which were nothing more than cobbled-together test mules built from the S2000 platform — this NSX has bodywork that looks close to production specification. Although the design of the original concept didn't get favorable reviews, it appears as though Acura has stuck with similar styling for the production car. Instead of going for an all-out sports car, Acura is aiming for high-end GTs instead. Think Aston Martin DB9, not Nissan GT-R. As a result, Acura has abandoned its former midengine concept and adopted a traditional front-engine 2+2 layout. The company is after prestige, not just speed. That said, the 2011 Acura NSX is still expected to offer supercar performance. According to our sources in Japan, Takeo Fukui, Honda's CEO, has tasked his R&D team with building an NSX that's faster around the Nürburgring than both the 2009 Nissan GT-R and the upcoming Lexus LF-A. Sounds optimistic, but according to our shooters Honda is already close to its goal. One hand timed lap came in at 7:37, just 8 seconds longer than the GT-R's fastest lap. Not bad considering that this was Honda's first trip to the Nürburgring with this prototype. Credit the NSX's formidable new power plant, a 5.5-liter V10 with as much as 550 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The engine is a slightly larger version of the V8 that Honda will use for the next-generation rear-wheel-drive RL sedan, and it will use cylinder deactivation under light loads for maximum efficiency. Additional efficiency gains will come from the use of an eight-speed automatic transmission that will feature shift paddles on the steering wheel. Getting all this power to the ground will be a challenge in a front-engine car, so the new NSX will employ a modified version of Honda's Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system. Packaging could be tight, however, with the big V10 up front. A combination of steel and aluminum will be used for the chassis that will form the basis for what looks like a relatively small car. We have reports of NSX mules being tested in the U.S. alongside the Aston Martin DB9, Mercedes-Benz SL550 and the Porsche 911 Turbo, so this should tell you about the kind of car the NSX will become. There's still time for changes, though, as the 2011 Acura NSX isn't expected to go on sale until late 2010. Who knows what Nissan and Lexus will have on the road by then, but from the sound of it, Honda is making sure that the NSX won't be lagging behind. 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG Rips the Nürburgring FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE MERCEDES SLC AMG: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=126572 Various names have been thrown around for this ultra-exotic supercoupe, but for now we're calling it the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG. It will replace the McLaren-built SLR coupe and roadster in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Whether it will carry the Mercedes name or arrive badged purely as an AMG only is still unclear. Since McLaren and Mercedes have parted ways, most of the development work on the SLC is being done by AMG with additional help from HWA, a racing company established by Hans Werner Aufrecht (HWA), one of the founding partners in AMG. HWA will most likely concentrate on the body and suspension, while AMG builds the engine. Although the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series — another AMG project with HWA input — will use a twin-turbo V12, the SLC will most likely get a turbocharged V8 with similar horsepower. Given that the V12 in the SL65 Black Series produces 670 horsepower, figure around 700 hp at least for the SLC. A fortified version of Mercedes' new MCT seven-speed automatic is the most likely transmission. Viper bodywork is being used to keep the size and styling of the SLC under wraps. It's an effective tool, although it can't hide the car's long wheelbase and ultra-wide stance. According to Car magazine (which claims to have seen documents with the SLC's measurements), the wheelbase stands at 106.3 inches while the overall length is 183 inches. In comparison, the latest SL63 AMG has a 100.8-inch wheelbase and is 181.3 inches long. At 76.8 inches across, the SLC is also more than 5 inches wider than a standard SL. With production of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series still several months off, the introduction of the SLC is still at least a year away. This puts its start of production sometime in 2010. That should be soon enough to fill the gap left by the soon-to-be-departed SLR, yet far enough out to let any bad taste left by the failed McLaren/Mercedes collaboration fade away. Expect no such drama from AMG — and a better overall car. Tags: 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG spy video Edmunds Inside Line Nürburgring |
