Amy Winehouse performs @ Mandela's 46664 Concert in London Singer Amy Winehouse Takes the Stage at Nelson Mandela's Birthday Show Looking tan and radiant, Amy Winehouse on Friday sang at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert in London in spite of health problems that have plagued her. Winehouse, 24, has undergone numerous medical tests and spent time in the hospital in recent weeks after fainting at her home in London earlier this month. She has been photographed looking pale and sickly. But there were no signs of illness Friday night in Hyde Park when Winehouse took the stage in front of nearly 50,000 to perform hits including "Rehab" and "Valerie," London's Daily Mail reported. Later, the blues songstress known for her heavy black eyeliner and jet-black beehive hairdo returned with Jerry Dammers and the Soweto Gospel Choir for a rendition of "Free Nelson Mandela" by The Special AKA. At one point, Winehouse gave a nod to her husband, Blake, who is in prison, by replacing the lyrics with "Free Blakey, my fella," according to the Mail. The concert was dubbed 46664 after Mandela's prison number, also the name of his AIDS charity, which will receive money raised by the birthday bash. Among the other celebrities and performers were Annie Lennox; Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith; Leona Lewis; Razorlight; British Prime Minister Gordon Brown; and Sugababes, the Mail reported. Members of Queen closed the show with "We Are the Champions." Tags: amy winehouse nelson mandela's 90th birthday concert 46664 london performs rehab valerie soul jazz r&b |

46664 Concert Honoring Mandela at 90 - London, 27 June 2008 This is an edited compilation of video material from previous 46664 events released to the media to promote the June 27th, 2008 concert. If you went to the concert, please leave some comments about your experience! Here's the official press release text: Many of the world's most powerful and instantly recognisable figures and a concert audience of 46,664 will pay their tributes to one of the world's most loved leaders, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and icon of freedom, Nelson 'Madiba' Mandela, as he turns 90 later this year. Mr. Mandela will arrive in London in June to take part in a series of events to mark his birthday: a very rare occasion since he is now finally "retired from retirement." Royalty and politicians from both sides of the Atlantic, leading names from business, sport, film and entertainment -- and some of the most successful musicians of the past twenty years -- make up the birthday list for three days of celebrations, culminating in a three-hour evening concert in London's Hyde Park on Friday June 27, The 46664 Concert Honouring Nelson Mandela at 90. President Bill Clinton, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Will Smith, Ms. Oprah Winfrey, Robert de Niro and Forest Whitaker are amongst those who will attend some of the events. Lewis Hamilton, British Formula 1 driver for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team will attend his very first 46664 event. Artists specially invited to perform for Mr. Mandela at the Friday night 90th birthday concert will include Queen + Paul Rodgers, Annie Lennox, Simple Minds, Leona Lewis, the Sugababes, Dame Shirley Bassey, Razorlight, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant, and Jamelia, along with international 46664 Ambassadors Italy's Zucchero and Spain's Amaral. . Joining them to celebrate the life of the world's most respected statesman will be South African and African artists including Johnny Clegg, Sipho Mabuse, multi-South African Music Awards winner Loyiso, Kurt Darren, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Aids orphan choir The Children of Agape -- the subject of the award winning film feature 'We Are Together', the legendary Papa Wemba and Sudanese 'war child' rapper Emmanuel Jal. The concert will feature numerous unexpected appearances, with several major artists keeping silent about their involvement in order to take both Mr Mandela and the audience by surprise. [ends] Editor's Note: Here's the London finale song, "Free Nelson Mandela", with the Clash's Jerry Dammers, who wrote it, Amy Winehouse who is singing it, and the rest of the concert's performers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z0Qoo0hva8&feature=related Also for those who haven't seen/heard it, Peter Gabriel's amazing song Biko: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNQuJm67OzE Finally, if you've never seen it, go rent the film "Cry Freedom." It's an incredible film, enough said. :-) Tags: world music aids benefit concert mandela london 2008 46664 |

"The craic was 90" (Mandela 46664) Video relating to Dr. Patrick Treacy who campaigned for Nelson Mandela's release during the eighties and later attended his 90th Birthday celebrations in Hyde Park London in June 2008. At the concert, many of the world's most powerful singers paid their tributes to the man who was once held in prison in South Africa by an apartheid government. Mandela started the 46664 campaign as an African response to the global HIV AIDS epidemic that stalks that continent. Although Mandiba originally did little to help HIV sufferers he now invites the whole world to take the fight in hand. 46664 began in 2003 when Mandela realised that to reach the youth of the world he needed to engage the support of the people who most appeal to them. "Ein eigentlich sehr mystisches Lied, es geht darin um Liebe und Ganzheit." Dela (I Know Why The Dog Howls At The Moon) from Crazy Beautiful World 1990 One day I looked up and there you stood Like a simple question looking for an answer Now I am a whale listening to some inner call Swimming blindly to throw myself upon your shores But what if I don't find when I have landed Would you leave me here to die on your shores stranded? I think I know why the dog howls at the moon. I think I know why the dog howls at the moon. I say: "Dela! Dela! Ngiyadela! (Content, content I am content) When I am with you! Dela! Sondela! Mama sondela! (Closer, closer, come closer mama) I burn for you! Chorus : I've been waiting for you all my life -- waiting for a miracle I've been waiting day and night -- day and night I've been waiting for you all my life -- waiting for redemption I've been waiting day and night -- I burn for you A blind bird sings inside the cage that is my heart And the image of your face comes to me when I'm alone in the dark If I could give a shape to this ache that I have for you If I could find the voice that says the words that capture you I think I know, I think I know I think I know why the dog howls at the moon. I say: "Dela! Dela! Ngiyadela! (Content, content I am content) When I am with you! Dela! Sondela! Mama sondela! (Closer, closer, come closer mama) I burn for you!
