Saverio Mercadante - Amleto - Finale act I, part I Saverio Mercadante Opera: Amleto, Melodramma tragico in two acts, first performance 26 december 1822, Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Libretto: Felice Romani Finale, act I: Qui fu commesso, o popoli Geltrude: Susan McCulloch Amleto: Diana Montague Claudio: Ashley Thorburn Amelia: Theresa Goble Aldano: Ian Thompson Courtiers, followers of Amleto, followers of Claudio: Geoffrey Mitchell Choir Orchestra: Philharmonia Orchestra Conductor: David Parry Although Romani drew his libretto upon Shakespeare's Hamlet and a later french play there isn't much Shakespeare left. Romani found Shakespeare too fantastic and the french play too weak and pallid. There is no Polonius and Ophelia is renamed to Amelia, she does not go mad and does not die. There is no Laerte, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern; and no grave-diggers, even the ghost is a minor part and has only two things to say. In the the first act finale, Amleto declares that everybody must swear, at the altar in the chapel, that they had no hand in the murder of his father. Claudio is the first one who must swear and a storm breaks out at this moment and the ghost appears. The finale is tense and a prove of a very effective theatre.
