Video Clip: Big Bucks, Big Pharma Documentary Visit http://secure.mef.tv/itemdesc.asp?ic=224-I-D for more information. Newly released by the Media Education Foundation, "Big Bucks, Big Pharma" pulls back the curtain on the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry to expose the insidious ways that illness is used, manipulated, and in some instances created, for capital gain. Focusing on the industry's marketing practices, media scholars and health professionals help viewers understand the ways in which direct-to-consumer (DTC) pharmaceutical advertising glamorizes and normalizes the use of prescription medication, and works in tandem with promotion to doctors. Combined, these industry practices shape how both patients and doctors understand and relate to disease and treatment. Ultimately, Big Bucks, Big Pharma challenges us to ask important questions about the consequences of relying on a for-profit industry for our health and well-being. Featuring interviews with Dr. Marcia Angell (Dept. of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Former Editor New England Journal of Medicine), Dr. Bob Goodman (Columbia University Medical Center; Founder, No Free Lunch), Gene Carbona (Former Pharmaceutical Industry Insider and Current Executive Director of Sales, The Medical Letter), Katharine Greider (Journalist; Author, The Big Fix: How the Pharmaceutical Industry Rips Off American Consumers,), Dr. Elizabeth Preston (Dept. of Communication, Westfield State College), and Dr. Larry Sasich (Public Citizen Health Research Group). Big Bucks, Big Pharma Extra: Drug Costs and PR Visit http://secure.mef.tv/itemdesc.asp?ic=224-I-D for more information. A special extra to the film "Big Bucks, Big Pharma," this compilation shows how drug companies thwart attempts to rein in skyrocketing prescription drug costs through false claims that regulation will hinder the research and development of essential new drugs. These PR campaigns by the pharmaceutical industry aim to frighten the public, and divert us from realizing that high drug prices are more about feeding multi-billion dollar industry profits, and supporting massive advertising and lobbying efforts, than they are about securing the invention of effective new drugs. Bucks fan sinks half court shot to win 2008 Chevy Malibu Check us out on Twitter: http://twitter.com/bucksdotcom or http://bucks.com MILWAUKEE -- We're not sure if this one even hit the rim, but no matter how it went in, Michael Hall of East Troy, Wisconsin, will trade in his beat-up wheels for a hard earned 2008 Chevy Malibu for sinking a half court shot during halftime of the Bucks vs. Nets game Saturday night at the Bradley Center. The half-time competition has become a staple at Bucks home games throughout the years. At each Bradley Center-based contest, two random fans are selected to participate in the Chevy Super Shot 2007-2008 Midwest Airlines Skyshots Competition. Both contestants are given 24 seconds to make as many free throws as possible. The shooter with the most made free throws advances to half-court for one shot at the coveted grand prize -- the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. Hall was attending his second Bucks game of the year when he was approached and asked to be a part of the contest. "I usually get to nine or ten games a year," Hall said. "The car I own right now is pretty old and beat-up, so this is perfect." The Chevy Super Shot 2007-2008 Midwest Airlines Competition is sponsored by Chevrolet, Midwest Airlines and the Milwaukee Bucks. Hall's car will be presented to him at a future Bucks home game this season. Tags: Milwaukee Bucks Fan Half Court Shot Win 2008 Chevy Malibu Super Midwest Airlines Skyshots Competition |
