LARAMIE WY I-80 CLOSED - DUE TO SNOW AND WRECKS - Intersate 80 was closed on December 1st going east from Laramie, Wyoming after 9:00PM due to alot of truck wrecks, jacknifed trucks, trucks crossing the medium, and half of the trucks not having chains on the trucks as required. I-80 was reopened early in the morning after the wrecks were cleaned up and the 8 plus inches of snow was plowed away. Wyoming Chain Law: Chains, snow tires or all-wheel drive required during storms. What is known as the chain law states that, "Travel on a highway may be restricted to all-wheel-drive vehicles or motor vehicles equipped with tire chains or adequate snow tires when the superintendent or his authorized representative determines that travel is sufficiently hazardous due to snow, ice, or other conditions." The Wyoming Highway Patrol and local law-enforcement agencies may place this restriction to travel on highways when bad weather necessitates. Notice of the law being in effect is generally noted by highway signing and by broadcasts over local radio stations. Wyoming travel information is available by telephone and on the Internet from WYDOT, which provides frequent updates of current road conditions (including the imposing and lifting of the chain law) during the winter season. It can be accessed toll free by dialing 511 in Wyoming or 888-WYO-ROAD. The latter number is available nationwide and is toll free.
