2008 05-12 MediaBytes: JIMMY FALLON - NEWS CORP.- FACEBOOK - NBC will officially name Jimmy Fallon as the future host of Late Night. Fallon will takeover for Conan O'Brien beginning June of 2009, when O'Brien will begin hosting "The Tonight Show." NEWS CORP. has pulled its bid for NEWSDAY. The media conglomerate withdrew its bid for the Long Island newspaper a week after CABLEVISION bid $650 million for NEWSDAY. If Ruper Murdoch's News Corp. bid had been accepted, it would have faced immense FCC scrutiny, as the company already owns two newspapers and two television stations in the New York Market. Instead, Cablevision, whose interest in the newspaper is still sketchy at best, is likely to be the new owner of Newsday. FACEBOOK borrows $100 million for server upgrade. Rather than go public and sell stock to help finance a serious server upgrade, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of the social networking site, chose to let venture loan firm TRIPLEPOINT front the money. The upgrade comes months after Zuckerberg announced that Facebook's projected revenue for 2008 is expected to jump from $150 million in 2007 to $350 million in '08. The iPhone is currently unavailable at the APPLE online store. The move comes days after UK retailer O2 stopped selling the phone. Noting that Apple never telegraphs its months in advance, analysts believe this could mean that 3G iPhones are ready to be shipped in as little as a few days. RESEARCH IN MOTION will roll out its new Blackberry Bold today. RiM's update to the popular handheld is a media-rich, 3G offering set to compete with the iPhone, while additional processing power aids its more advanced business applications. The new Blackberry Bold is a sleek offering fit for both personal users and its traditional business clientele. Kara Swisher is Not Keen on News Corp Takeover of Dow Jones Kara Swisher is Not Keen on News Corp Takeover of Dow Jones....And the Bancrofts Seem to Agree Kara Swisher, a longtime reporter and columnist at the Wall Street Journal, is one of the most influential technology journalists/author. She has also built a hugely successful conference business "D" for the Dow Jones Company. Just last week, she launched a blog with colleague Walt Mossberg. The new blog has lots of really good videos. I spoke with her this morning on Hollywood Boulevard outside the the AlwaysOn OnHollywood conference where Kara moderated a panel with Kevin Rose, Arianna Huffington and Alan Citron. I asked Kara about the prospect of a News Corp bid for the Dow Jones company. Like many of her colleagues at the Journal, she is not too thrilled. It seems that the Bancroft family, which controls Dow Jones, is not too thrilled either. The Wall Street Journal just reported that the Bancroft family is "taking no" action on the Murdoch bid. Here's an update on Bloomberg. We'll see. See this video on Beet.TV: http://www.beet.tv/2007/05/kara_swisher_no.html Tags: Swisher Murdoch Wall Street Journal News Corp Bancroft Dow Jones |

Toshiba - HD DVD - MTVN - News Corp - MySpace - MediaBytes F TOSHIBA is planning to retire the HD DVD format. Reuters reports that the company is in the final stages of planning its exit from the high-def disc market, handing Blu-ray the role of industry standard. The move comes just days after Wal-Mart ended support for HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray. MTV NETWORKS has acquired BABUNGA and its collection of sites dedicated to small parenting niches. MTVN will establish an ad network that sells ad space on the sites and a handful of similar third-party parenting destinations. The initiative will be centered on the newly revamped ParentsConnect.com, an MTVN social network launched in 2006. NEWS CORP. is trying to create a Hulu-like venture that offers content from the major music labels on MySpace. The deal calls for The Big Four to receive equity in MySpace in exchange for allowing their content to be offered free with ad-support. No label has signed on yet but talks are heating up. ADVERTISERS are asking ABC, NBC and CBS to retire the $125 million in "integration fees" paid every year just to purchase time on their networks. The AAAA and the ANA will soon release a policy paper questioning the fees and asking the networks to defend their necessity. The paper contends that the need for the fees has been removed by advances in technology and points out that other networks (such as Fox) do not charge network integration fees. CARAT DIGITAL is working on an ad sales platform that uses set-top box data to present on-screen targeted "bugs" to television viewers. The system is currently in testing stages, where it is being used to offer real estate services to viewers thought to be interested in buying a new home. In the future, the company will integrate purchasing data supplied by Acxiom to create a detailed picture of a household's location, demographics, viewing habits and purchasing history. News Corp - Dow Jones - WGA - DGA - Kevin Martin - Jeff Imme NEWS CORP officially completed its acquisition of DOW JONES yesterday after 60% of shareholders voted to close the deal. Rupert Murdoch soon showed up at the Dow Jones holiday party wearing a Santa hat. He brought some gifts, in the form of a new CEO, a new publisher and permanent vacations for several top DJ executives. The new lineup of News. Corp. veterans begins work today. THE WGA has filed a complaint against the AMPTP with the National Labor Relations Board citing unfair practices. The Guild claims that the producers violated federal law by issuing an ultimatum and then breaking off talks. Meanwhile, the Directors Guild of America said it was ready to begin talks with the AMPTP after the new year. KEVIN MARTIN will push ahead with the Dec. 18 vote on media ownership rules, despite complaints from legislators and the Senate Commerce Committee bill that seeks to block the vote. Martin told the Committee he would not delay the vote, ignoring complaints from both Democrats and Republicans. JEFFREY IMMELT addressed speculation about a possible sale of NBCU during an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box. Immelt said the company is too valuable to consider selling, despite its recent struggles. He acknowledges the rapid change hitting the industry, saying "Anyone that thinks the TV-network business is going to be the same two years from now is crazy." However, he thinks GE is in a position to capitalize on that change. We'll see. WEBKINZ is suffering a Facebook-like consumer backlash after adding movie ads to the popular children's virtual world. Traffic for the formerly ad-free site has surged by 800% this year and over 7 million unique users visited in October. Some of that growth may be in jeopardy, as the recent addition of ads for Hollywood films has angered parents and triggered complaints from The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. Some parents are blocking children's access to the site, creating a challenge to the new ad-supported business model. * Get the story at Media30.com * Tags: shelly palmer mediabytes media news corp rupert murdoch dow jones wga dga writers guild of america directors |
