Nature Parks CAMARGUE Provence, France NPM-DVD-123 - Nature Parks CAMARGUE Provence, France Nowhere else are both countryside and waterscapes more attractive. In France, amongst the spacious tributaries of the Rhone is the romantic region of the Camargue. Once considered as hostile terrain, today this swampy area is becoming increasingly popular, which is not surprising with the large variety of impressive locations that this fascinating region has to offer and the region's traditional white horses that are famous throughout the world. Bright fields of sunflowers are everywhere yet the Camargue is more well known for its cultivation of rice. In the high season of the summer months, of which the inhabitants of the small town of Saintes-Maries-De-La-Mer numbers around a thousand, the population increases ten fold. The fortified exterior of the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Mer that was built on the site of an early Christian chapel is a reminder of this region's dramatic past. Legend has it that its beach was the starting point for the subsequent spread of Christianity in Provence. In addition to its significance as a place of pilgrimage, life in the village centres around the Camargue bulls and it even contains a bullring! Just as with Provence the beauty of the Camargue has attracted numerous famous painters and artists who were inspired by the wild tranquillity of this area and the landscape itself is like a painting when suddenly a collection of water lilies can bring to mind a famous impressionistic painting by Monet. The region's outstandingly beautiful and harmonious combination of water, air and earth is unique in Europe. The French poet, Daudet, was absolutely right when he described the Camargue as the 'most beautiful swamp in the world!' Nature Parks YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Wyoming NPM-DVD-128 - Located in the north west of the U.S.A is Yellowstone, a national park of the superlative in which the impressive white water of Old Faithful is today one of the most famous and most photographed natural spectacles in the world. Indeed, for more than a century this mighty geyser has been the proud and unique landmark of the oldest national park in the United States. The Yellowstone National Park is famous for its highly visible geological processes. The area close to Old Faithful not only features a number of geysers but also numerous hot springs that highlight the tremendous thermal power that lies beneath the earth's surface. Today the Grand Geyser is the largest active geyser in the world. Its huge eruptions occur every eight to fourteen hours and last for nine to twelve minutes and can sometimes reach a height of sixty metres. The Yellowstone is one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Because it is located directly above a geological hot spot, a huge cave constantly fills with magma. It is situated at a depth of eight kilometres and is the reason for the park's visible geo-thermal activity. Some kilometres south of Nymph Lake is another geothermal area, the Norris Geyser Basin. This area is unique among the landscapes of Yellowstone Park as it is not only the park's hottest area but also boasts the largest geyser in the world, Steamboat Geyser. Although Yellowstone National Park is important for North America's plant and wild life, this nine thousand square kilometre nature reserve is primarily a geological park. Amazing, fantastic, incredible and wonderful: how can you put into words a place that provides so many remarkable glimpses of the inner workings of Planet Earth? Nature Parks NAKURU Kenya NPM-DVD-129 - South of the equator, in Kenya, is Nakuru Lake one of the natural wonders of the world and the ideal habitat for a large variety of African wildlife. In 1967, Nakuru was the first National Park in Africa that was also designated as a bird reserve. It covers an area of 188 square kilometres and contains much flora and fauna. There are more than four hundred varieties of birds in Nakuru and British biologist Peter Scott called this bird paradise, 'the greatest ornithological spectacle on Earth'. There are flamingos for as far the eye can see and also large numbers of pelicans, plus the Nimmersatt, an African stork. Large herds of antelope and zebra graze on the hot savannah while vultures, lions and hyena hunt for food among the more isolated, slow moving and weaker animals. Giraffes, elephants and rhinos share the same nutritious trees while some of the taller trees are the perfect home for monkeys and baboons. The massive Plant Eater is, apart from the elephant, the largest land mammal in the world plus, with more than thirty varieties of black and two varieties of white rhinos, Lake Nakuru ensures the continued protection of these mighty creatures. Africa is like a Noah's Ark in which the animals of its game reserves live free and protected. It's no surprise therefore Lake Nakuru is known as a magnificent wonder of the Dark Continent's natural world. Tags: NAKURU LAKE Kenya adventure destination landmark nature travel log culture |

Nature Parks YOSEMITE PARK California NPM-DVD-139 - Majestic, thousand metre high rock walls flank a magnificent valley, the heart of the world famous Yosemite National Park located in California's Sierra Nevada. The first thing that strikes most visitors to the park is its spectacular waterfalls which. are the highest on the entire North American Continent and plunge down more than seven hundred metres. At Yosemite Falls the water from Yosemite Creek falls from the elevated regions of the Sierra Nevada down into the valley below. For several centuries, long before any white settlers reached the valleys of today's park, the area that surrounded the Merced River was the sole domain of the Native American Indian. For almost four thousand years this was the hunting ground of the Awanitshi Indians. In bygone times the Indians called today's Bridal Veil Fall, 'Pohono', The Spirit of the Wind. The name is most apt because the water is continuously forced away from the rock walls and the height of the waterfall is equivalent to around sixty-two storeys. In the northern more inaccessible sections of the park the cold and clear water of the streams flows into the Tuolmne River. The source of the water that travels into the Merced River is a combination of several creeks that are located in the three thousand metre high alpine regions of both the Cathedral and Clarke Mountain Ranges. The park's prehistoric Mammoth Trees are truly gigantic and their trunks can reach a diameter of nearly ten metres and a height of up to seventy. The mighty trees are real natural wonders and are even protected from fire by their fifty centimetre thick bark. Strong tan acids prevent insects from attacking the wood and it's not uncommon to come across trees that are a thousand years old. Yosemite is a truly splendid example of enchanting natural scenery with all the magnificence and artistry of water, gentle, powerful and at its most captivating. Nature Parks ROCKY MOUNTAINS Colorado NPM-DVD-143 - The Rocky Mountains National Park is one of the most unique and impressive natural paradises in the United States Of America. It covers an area of a thousand square kilometres and was inaugurated in 1915. The picturesque Bear Lake lies within a forested area and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the park. At high altitude, several paths such as the Nature Trail lead through the lake's natural landscape. The idyllic beauty is truly spellbinding and it is not surprising that Bear Lake is the most popular photo shot of the entire park. It was discovered that twelve thousand years ago prehistoric Indians hunted within the Rocky Mountains. The legendary culture of the Nasazi Indians originated around two thousand years ago and left its traces in what is today the national park. Alberta Falls in the south of Glacier Gorge is one of the park's most popular sightseeing destinations where white masses of foaming water race down several levels into the valley below. The road from Glacier Gorge winds its way in a northerly direction past Glacier Basin and the eastern park entrance close to Estes Park. In this region the Rocky Mountains are at their most beautiful and the landscape in the area of Horseshoe Park is reminiscent of the exciting and colourful Wild West of old. The vast wilderness in the west of the USA has survived in the Rocky Mountains right up to the present day and is a fascinating tribute to the amazing natural world of North America.
