Seen on the UPRR in 1993 In May of 1953 the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club ran its first excursion with a trip over the UP from Denver to Laramie behind Challenger 3967. Forty years later the Club recreated that trip, complete with the 3967. Too bad they didn't doublehead with the 3985. Oh, wait a minute, that was the 3985, just renumbered for the day. In those days (1993) I was working with a group of middle school and high school students who were avid model railroaders and railfans, budding foamers as it were. Together we raised, earned, begged, borrowed and saved enough money to buy eight tickets. Those eight tickets, along with two cars, made possible an unforgettable experience for twelve kids and four adult chaperones. Half the group rode the train to Laramie while the other half chased it, then we traded places for the return trip. Seen on the UPRR in 1953 (new & improved) In June 1953 my father took my little brother and me, along with his Cine-Kodak Eight movie camera, on a rail excursion from Ohio to Colorado. In this clip from the movies he filmed we enjoy a trip by UP passenger train from Denver to Cheyenne for a tour of the engine terminal there. That's me in the red t-shirt. My brother is the lucky kid on the Big Boy pilot. This high-tech video transfer replaces the low-tech "off-the-wall" transfer I posted a while back. Seen on the UPRR in Wyoming, July 1992: 3985 The 3985 is serviced and turned for the trip back over Sherman to Cheyenne, WY. I believe this is in Laramie. If I am wrong about that please let me know. UPRR 3985, 844, and 6936, Part 2 of 2 The 2005 edition of the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Steam Special had some problems that transformed it into a unique opportunity for railfan photographers. It started out from Denver, CO, as planned, behind UP Challenger 3985 and the recently rebuilt Northern 844. But the 3985 was taken off the train at Fort Lupton due to mechanical problems, and the 844 handled it solo to LaSalle where three diesel units were added "just in case."
