DEERHOOF experiments with sheet music The band Deerhoof has leaked a song from their upcoming album Offend Maggie in the form of sheet music, asking their fans to tell them how it should sound. WNYC Culture has stepped up to their challenge, creating an interpretation of the song relying solely on the sight-reading abilities of Deerhoof fans at their recent Prospect Park performance. Deerhoof has always been wary of calling their work Experimental Music, perhaps this "experiment" will change that. Find out. And hear more from Deerhoof at http://www.wnyc.org/music/ Produced by Benjamen Walker and Andrea Silenzi for WNYC Culture Tags: Deerhoof WNYC radio sheet music experiments wordless brooklyn video |

WNYC-TV - Video Music Box opening - 1989 Can you name the artists and/or the video clips in this sequence? I know who most of them are, but do you? Leave your answers in the comments section. This is the classic opening to "Video Music Box", the music video program that aired on WNYC-TV (now WPXN-TV) in New York from 1984 to 1996. This opening was used from around 1987 to '96, when the program moved to WNYE-TV after WNYC-TV was sold by the City of New York. It was recorded off-air from WNYC-TV in 1989. Hosted by Ralph McDaniels. "Video Music Box" started with an eclectic format of R&B, Pop, Rock, and early Rap/Hip-Hop selections. As time went on, the program became the main outlet for Rap and R&B, as artists from those genres (specifically Rap) did not receive major airplay on MTV, VH1, and other music video programs during the middle 1980s. (Of course, MTV would finally catch on with the trend when it launched "Yo! MTV Raps" in 1988, a move partially inspired by this program.) Many artists from the "Golden Age" of Hip-Hop made their debuts on "VMB" and established artists used the program to debut their latest offerings. Though it has remained a New York local show, the influence of "Video Music Box" streched far and wide as one of the major factors in the growth of Rap and Hip-Hop.
