Soviet Yakovlev's rare footage of soviet VTOL aircraft The Yak-38 Forger Originally known as the Yak-36MP in the West, the Yak-38 was the first production vertical takeoff/landing aircraft built by the Soviet Union. Similar to the British Harrier, the Yak-38 was built to operate from the Soviet medium-sized Kiev class aircraft carriers. It was due to be replaced by the advanced Yak-141 until government funding for that project was cancelled. A total of about 230 aircraft were built. Yak-141 Freestyle Developed to replace the Yak-38 for Soviet aircraft carrier use, the Yak-41 (later redesignated Yak-141) was the world's first supersonic vertical/short-takeoff and landing aircraft. Though a very advanced and capable design, Yakovlev has been frustrated by shrinking funding from the Russian government and has sought international partners to continue development of the design. Yakovlev engineers have also been consulted by Lockheed in designing its V/STOL version of the Joint Strike Fighter. The Yak-9 was one of a series of four Yakovlev fighters, Yak-1, 3, 7, and 9, that were used by the Red Air Force during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). The series made its flying debut with the Yak-1 in January of 1940 with the first test flight, and ten months later, in October of 1940, five Yak-1s made the first public appearance of the type with a formation flyover of Red Square during the celebration of the Russian Revolution. At the time of the German invasion of Russia in June of 1941, 400 Yak-1s were available for service, and while not the equal of German ME-109, gave a good accounting of themselves, and showed a glimpse of the future where the Yaks would reign supreme in the end. The Yak-9 entered service in October 1942 as an improvement to the Yak-7 and immediately made its presence felt during the Battle of Stalingrad in early 1943. The first Yak-9's had wooden wings and a molded plywood skin which by the end of the war had been replaced on later models with aluminum. The original engine was a liquid cooled "V" engine, the M-105PF, which was rated at approximately 1,100 hp which by the end of WWII had been upgraded to 1,650hp. Original armament consisted of one 20mm cannon firing through the center of the propeller boss, one 12.7mm machine gun firing through the engine cowling and six rockets or two 220-pound bombs. The Yakovlev Yak-40 (NATO reporting name: Codling) is a small, three-engined airliner that is often called the first regional jet transport aircraft. It was introduced in 1966. MPK-Rossiya/0954647 Built to replace the Lisunov Li-2 (a DC-3 variant) and the Ilyushin Il-14, its main design feature was ease of operation outside major airport service areas. It was equipped with a built-in airstair and capable of STOL operations. Since the demise of the old Aeroflot, many have been converted from passenger service layout to more luxurious corporate layouts and are in use as corporate and private aircraft. Most of the Yak-40s in active service fly in the former Soviet Union. Some are flying in Europe, but are rare because of noise restrictions. Its nickname is "flying whistle"', for the distinct engine sound it makes. Another one is "истребитель керосина" ("kerosene exterminator") for low fuel efficiency: Yak-40 operating airfields are well known for leaving black fins on the runway. Yakovlev EG The Yakovlev OKB started development of helicopters after the war and designed an experimental machine, the Yak-EG with a coaxial rotor system. A prototype of this heli-copter was tested in 1947/48 following which it was decided that the coaxial rotor layout should be developed by the Kamov bureau, and Yakovlev moved on to other helicopter configurations.
