Another Korean Torchbearer Boycotting the Beijing Olympic To ANCHOR: In the midst of strong protests against the Chinese Communist regime's violent crackdown on Tibetans, another Korean Olympic torchbearer has announced he is boycotting the torch run. It looks like the Beijing Olympic torch relay, scheduled for the 27th in Seoul, is in deep trouble even before it starts. STORY: Green Korea Superintendent Mr. Choi, Seung-kook held a press conference on Tuesday announcing his decision to boycott the Beijing Olympic torch run. [Choi, Seung-kook, Superintendent of Green Korea]: "I hope that people understand that my decision was not made on a whim nor was it an easy one. I just hope that my decision can be a little help in peacefully resolving the bloodshed happening right now around Tibet." When Mr. Choi accepted the offer to be a torchbearer last November, he did so in hopes that the Beijing Olympics would truly be an "environmentally-friendly Olympics." [Choi, Seung-kook, Superintendent of Green Korea]: But, after realizing that China's human rights violations and the Tibetan situation are much more serious than he thought they were, he has been in agony. (...) I thought that what's happening in China and Tibet is not in sync with the spirit of peace. Realization of non-violence and peace is one of the principles of Green Korea. Comprehensively considering all this, I've come to the conclusion that it's not right to participate in the torch run for the Beijing Olympics." Hope Institute executive director Park, Won-soon also refused the Beijing Olympic torch run. Yonhap News says that [Hope Institute executive director Park, Won-soon ] "Director Park tries not to go in detail about the background of refusing the torch run, but the Tibetan situation is the reason behind his decision." Meanwhile, the Coalition for Tibetan Peace says it will hold its own torch relay on April 27th, separate from the Olympic torch relay. [Jung, Woong-ki, Coalition for Tibetan Peace]: "With a thought that there should be protests against the fact that the Beijing Olympic flame is passing through and that Koreans should show the will of peace... We will do this in a totally peaceful way that can appeal to many people." With Korean torchbearers dropping out and citizens stepping up the campaign for an Olympic boycott, the prospect for a smooth run for the Korean leg of the Beijing Olympic torch relay is quickly dimming.
