Huge Cubs/Sox Crosstown Classic Brawl 6/28/08 The Sox fan on the far side near the pole was talking trash from the beginning, so in the 4th inning he gets into it with another Sox fan when he starts talking about the guy in the Thome Jersey's "family"...then an old guy steps up and off they go... A good minute goes by with no security, the guy gets owned by a bunch of cubs and sox fans. he still fights the security...continues struggling, as his eye is black and bleeding, they handcuff him throw his shirt over his head and get him out of there. It happened in section 536 at the Cell... According to a ChicagoSports.com article: Doesn't sound like the brawling in the stands at Saturday's Cubs-White Sox game had much to do with Cubs against the Sox. According to Tom Lamb, head of security at U.S. Cellular Field, the Sox don't know what precipitated the brawl, but apparently some money fell out of the purse of a woman, and another fan picked it up and refused to give it back. That led to several fans punching the alleged offender. Video of the action showed a Cubs fan joining in on the same side as some White Sox fans. The man, Brian Nolan of Woodridge, was charged with theft and taken to district headquarters at 35th and Lowe Avenue and then to the First District lockup, according to a police source. He was released Saturday night on an I-bond. "He got thumped pretty good," Lamb said. "He did admit that he picked up the money that fell out of the purse, and said he didn't have to give it back." Actually, the cause of the fight may have been more personal than money. At least that's what it says at BustedCoverage.com. *sorry for the shakiness, there was a lot of pushing everywhere Tags: Cubs White Sox Brawl Baseball Fight Crosstown Classic Drunk Sports Handcuffed bloody chicago |

Lee Elia Tirade - Chicago Cubs - 4/29/83 LEE ELIA TIRADE Elia's outburst occurred on April 29, 1983, after the Cubs suffered a one-run home loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The rant took place during a postgame session with reporters in his office. Elia was pissed off at the continual booing by the Wrigley crowd (both during and after the game) and frustrated that no one could see beyond the Cubs' 5-14 record for any of the progress he felt the team was making. The fact that Elia's rant has been preserved for posterity is something of a miracle. In the early 80s, "baseball reporters didn't work with tape recorders. But radio guys certainly did. So it was that Elia's outburst came to be a part of the public domain." Les Grobstein, aka "ubiquitous" Les, was lurking on the edges of Elia's office, with tape rolling. For Grobstein, graduate of Chicago's Von Stuben High School, "it was his Zapruder moment." Elia commented that he dearly wished Grobstein "had gotten a flat tire on his way to Wrigley that afternoon." Elia clearly regrets his ourburst. "I made some comments that I don't even know how they came out of my mouth, because they were not comments that I normally would make. Never in my wildest dreams did I think somebody would run out of there and put it on the air." 1983 turned out to be Elia's final year as the Cubs' manager. Many have argued that Grobstein's tape sealed upper management's decision to fire Elia. Grobstein heartily disagrees. He commented recently that "the tirade and my tape did not get Lee Elia fired - the team starting to suck again did." Whatever the case, the tirade is now 25 years old, solidly entrenched in the firmament of baseball lore...and is TOTALLY AWESOME. Enjoy.
