If you're within a certain range, Travis will sidestep the attack and have the enemy's back. Note that the period of time during which Travis can retaliate depends upon how close he is to the enemy. The first clip shows what happens when Travis side-steps near the edge of the enemy's range. The background doesn't go dark, and the enemy merely stands confused for a little while. If, however, you sidestep when close to the enemy, you will get the darkstep background. This gives you more time to react and take advantage of the window, and Travis will deliver his combo much more quickly than normal. Different enemies seem to have different windows during which Travis will darkstep (rather than simply roll aside), so some darksteps are harder than others.
