Missouri National Guard Deployed To Help Sandbagging Effort The Missouri National Guard has been deployed to help with sandbagging efforts in several Missouri river towns. The Mississippi is already well above flood stage in many areas like Clarksville and may cause record flooding by the end of the week. In Clarksville, residents are trying to stay positive. But the river has already swallowed part of their main road, and they're running low on sandbags. For days, they've been battling to keep the river at bay. But Sunday, reinforcements arrived. The Missouri National Guard has been called up to join in the fight. Staff Sgt. James McCullough of the 1138th Transportation Company says, "We kinda look at it as a mission, and we want to complete this mission. So we're going to push it and do whatever it takes to get the job done." That means filling sandbags as fast as they can. The soldiers say they're glad to be helping here in their home state. Captain Adam Reichart says, "Most of us don't get alot of chance to do things here on the home front. So it's kind of exciting to help out our fellow Missourians, I think it's a neat feeling." Still, they have their work cut out for them. The mighty Mississippi has already overtopped its banks and is threatening numerous homes and businesses. Residents worry that this river is rising faster than they can fill sandbags to stop it. And they say in this race against time, they need all the help they can get. Just feet from the river, Dawn Beckwith is busy packing up her store. She says she's grateful for the help and hopeful all this sandbagging can save her business. Beckwith says, "These people are out here to save us, to help us, to help preserve our businesses and our town. I just don't even know, how do you begin to thank somebody for that?" Staff Sgt. McCullough says, "It's overwhelming. Thank you every time you walk up and down the street. Thank you very much. It's just a very welcome, very nice feeling." But the forecast for Clarksville is ominous: that this could be worse than the flood of 1993. The crest then was 37.7 feet. It could crest as high as 38 feet by Saturday. In addition to Clarksville, members of the National Guard have also been deployed to Canton and Hannibal. That brings the total number of soldiers to 175 on flood duty this week.
