I have decided to put most of the plays and TV dramas in this account, and the music in another (called "TheGreatPerformers"). All the Helen Mirren stuff I had will eventually be back here... Elizabeth I learns she is Queen Scene from 'Elizabeth R' starring Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I. I've posted a factual clip about Elizabeth's accession: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efKUUoRSTnc&feature=PlayList&p=05FE3B70FFE0F874&index=2 On 6th November 1558 Mary acknowledged that her heir was Elizabeth and requested her to make sure her debts were paid and to maintain the Church. She also asked for her mother's body to be brought to Westminster and to buried beside her but this and the other requests were overlooked (probably as it would have stirred up old feelings about Henry's first divorce and Elizabeth, Anne Boleyn's daughter, did not want to dwell on her own illegitimacy when acceding to the throne.) Mary died on the 17th November and Elizabeth quickly received the news at Hatfield. As Mary went through the process of dying, the road to Hatfield was clogged with traffic as so many were desperate to pay their allegiances to the soon to be Queen. According to tradition, Elizabeth was sitting under an oak tree when she received the news that she was Queen. As the drama depicts she is said to have immediately recited Psalm 118:23 however she spoke it in her wonderful Latin: 'A Domino factum est illud et est mirabile in oculis nostris.' 'This is the Lords doing; it is marvellous in our eyes'. Tags: Elizabeth Tudor Glenda Jackson |
