Are You Experienced? - Belly, Tanya Donelly, Jimi Hendrix cover For TRUE STEREO click: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxyOdtljas0&fmt=18 --- Hendrix LYRICS: "If you can just get your mind together Uh-then come on across to me Well hold hands and then well watch the sunrise From the bottom of the sea But first, are you experienced? Uh-have you ever been experienced-uh? Well, I have (well) I know, I know, youll probably scream and cry That your little world wont let you go But who in your measly little world, (-uh) Are you tryin to prove to that youre Made out of gold and-uh, cant be sold So-uh, are you experienced? Have you ever been experienced? (-uh) Well, I have Uh, let me prove it to you, yeah Trumpets and violins I can-uh, hear in the distance I think theyre callin our name Maybe now you cant hear them, But you will, ha-ha, if you just Take hold of my hand Ohhh, but are you experienced? Have you ever been experienced? Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful" ------------------------------- ALBUM/CD: Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix - is a 1993 album recorded by various artists in tribute to Jimi Hendrix and the Experience from many genres of popular music including his classic rock contemporaries Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, legendary blues man Buddy Guy, classical violinist Nigel Kennedy, alternative pop/rock bands Belly and Spin Doctors, hip hop artists P. M. Dawn, among others. According to the liner notes, the "artists were encouraged to not only record one of their own personal favorites but to also place their stamp on Jimi's songs." Several artists recorded radically different interpretations, particularly, P. M. Dawn, The Cure, Nigel Kennedy and Pat Metheny. Some artists, on the other hand, recorded versions that were rather similar to the originals. ------------------------------- Tanya Donelly named the band "Belly" because she thought the word was "both pretty and ugly". Their EP Slow Dust (1992), made number one on the British indie chart. Soon after, their single, Feed the Tree, made the top 40 in the British chart and their first album, Star (1993), got good reviews from newspapers and rock magazines, and hit number two on the British chart. In the United States, the album was RIAA Certified Gold, largely based on the success of "Feed the Tree," on Modern Rock radio stations and MTV, where the video was featured as part of MTV's Buzz Bin videos and Alternative Nation video show for much of 1993. Two follow-up singles were released, "Gepetto" and "Slow Dog," but neither matched the initial success of "Feed the Tree." Star was consequently nominated for two Grammys. Just after the release of Star, bassist Fred Abong left and was replaced by Gail Greenwood. Greenwood was originally a guitar player in a Boston-area metal band before being recruited to play bass in Belly. She became a main attraction at their shows, her hair wildly flying into her face as she stormed around the stage. The live sound of the band evolved to accommodate her style, with its shows featuring more electric guitar than before and less of the dreamy quality of its 1st album. As a result, the group's next album, King (1995), was more rock and roll-oriented. The album was not a popular success and the band was stuck between mainstream and underground acceptance. King saw its numerous singles fail to sustain any significant airplay on Modern Rock radio. The videos for "Now They'll Sleep" and "Super Connected" received little airplay on MTV outside of limited airings on 120 Minutes. Belly appeared on the April 20, 1995, cover of Rolling Stone magazine.(as seen in this video) In 1995, Belly was one of the support bands for R.E.M. on their world tour. In 1996, Donelly broke up the band; she has since released several solo albums. ------------------------------- I edited in a brief clip from 'Rainy Day, Dream Away' and some 'space radio tuner' clip to add some intro-effects... ;-) For more music from Tanya, visit my YouTube friend, berdigendae : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJYh5sOaNwk This is my tribute to Jimi and Tanya, and mermaids or mermen stuck onto rock ... Jimi Hendrix - The BEST EVER Are You Experienced (LIVE 1968) Winterland, Oct 10, 1968, the first song on the first show out of the total 6 shows over 3 days. It's one of the best - if not THE best - live recordings of Are You Experienced. It's so together musically all the way through the song compared to all other versions I have listened to. Controlled roaring feedback and a psychedelic solo that about beats everything. The version played on the first show on the second day (Oct 11) has a nice beginning, but doesn't come close to this musical perfection. It's found on THE JIMI HENDRIX CONCERTS (double LP 1982, and a CD release in 1990, also containing a version of Foxy Lady) All songs were written by Jimi Hendrix, except where noted. Side one 1. "Fire" - 3:43 (Winterland Oct 10, 1968) 2. "I Don't Live Today" - 6:50 (San Diego May 24, 1969) 3. "Red House" - 8:45 (Randall's Island July 17, 1970) Side two 1. "Stone Free" - 10:39 (Albert Hall Feb 24, 1969) 2. "Are You Experienced?" - 6:46 (Winterland Oct 10, 1968) Side three 1. "Little Wing" - 3:54 (Winterland Oct 11, 1968) 2. "Voodoo Chile" - 7:10 (Winterland Oct 10, 1968) 3. "Bleeding Heart" (Elmore James) - 7:39 (Albert Hall Feb 24, 1969) Side four 1. "Hey Joe" - 4:50 (Berkeley May 30, 1970) 2. "Wild Thing" (Chip Taylor) - 3:31 (Winterland Oct 12, 1968) 3. "Hear My Train A Comin'" - 8:27 (Winterland Oct 10, 1968) -------------------------- REVIEWS OF THE JIMI HENDRIX CONCERTS THE BEST LIVE HENDRIX ALBUM, February 24, 2008 A. Barrezueta "A. Barrezueta" (Chicago, IL United States) You will never hear another album like this. Get a copy while you can. I don't live today, Red house you can hear the Buddy Guy Influence, Stone Free faster paced version, Little Wing, Bleeding Heart, Hear my train a comin and Voodoo chile slight return are the best live versions ever heard. I bought this album when it first came out and wore it out, I have the CD now and am hoe that one day the Hendrix estate will release this gem again http://www.amazon.com/review/R2UT5T0LGU48BN/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm -- Hendrix: what more needs to be said?, October 25, 2006 Dawoud Kringle "Mysticjaz" (New York City) My favorite track from this collection is "Are You Experienced?" The only flaw on it was when he flubbed the words of the last verse. Hendrix probably forgot it because he'd just finished playing a guitar solo that could have destroyed the whole world. http://www.amazon.com/review/RKMFS0WWHMIYX/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm -- Jimi Lives!, December 13, 2005 AJ I've been a Hendrix fan for over 30 years, since my older sister gave me Band of Gypsies, my first LP. As a teenager, I built a vinyl collection of over 30 domestics, imports and bootlegs, trying to find any alternate take or live track available. As anyone who has gone this route knows, there were plenty of scams / duds promising far more than delivered, with either very poor recording quality or uninspired performances.......this is not one of them. WITHOUT QUESTION, THIS IS THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION OF LIVE MATERIAL; the sound quality is superb, and the playing is incredibly unique. "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" features 12 songs, including 6 tracks from the 3 day Winterland series, as well as Albert Hall (2) , Berkeley, New York Pop, San Diego and the LA Forum. Red House is stunning......you will listen to it over and over. Stone Free features an extended jam with Jimi throwing in flamenco licks. For those of us who appreciate Jimi's love of the blues, there are wonderful versions of Hear My Train, Bleeding Heart and Hey Joe, in addition to Red House. Are You Experienced is as psychedelic as could be hoped for, yet clean. An unexpected inclusion is the tranquil Little Wing. The only thing missing is Purple Haze. Unfortunately, the CD of this album is now difficult to find, probably due to legal issues between Alan Douglas and Jimi's estate. I agree with another reviewer......Grab this if you can find it! You will end up burning copies for all of your friends! http://www.amazon.com/review/RG4T495TD7NPS/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm Tags: Blues Rock The Jimi Hendrix Concerts Are You Experienced Electric Church Music |
