Combating fluorosis - Harvesting rooftop rainwater Arghyam (www.arghyam.org) is helping the documentation and dissemination of the Sachetana programme of the government of Karnataka which seeks to tackle excess fluoride in groundwater. This water has 1.5 ppm and more fluoride and is the only source of drinking water. Sachetana seeks to provide rooftop rainwater as fluoride free water to drink. Under the Sachetana programme of the government of Karnataka the NGO BIRD-K implements rooftop rainwater harvesting. This family has a 7000 litre tank and collects rain. A small plastic hand pump draws the water from the sump tank in the kitchen itself. The tanks are invariably underground though a few may be over the ground tanks. HEALTH CANADA WANTS TO CUT FLUORIDE LEVELS an expert panel recommends reducing the amount of fluoride - a chemical that helps prevent toot decay -- in drinking water. The panel says this, along with other measures, would better protect children from developing fluorosis, a mottling of the teeth that occurs with too much fluoride. In a report posted to Health Canada's website, the panel also recommends encouraging the use of low-fluoride toothpaste by children between the ages of 0 and 3, and reducing the levels in infant formula. The panel suggests a fluoride level of 0.7 parts per million. The current allowable range is 0.8 to one ppm. Health Canada told CTV News that it will accept the recommendations, but the ultimate decision on implementation will be left up to individual municipalities. Through a government of Karntaka project called Sachetana BIRD-K an NGO is implementing a rooftop rainwater harvesting scheme in 60 villages of the state. Laghumuddepalli is one of them. A rainwater tank of capacity 8225 litres has been built in this house. It cost Indian Rupees 12.000 (around US 300 $) The household has contributed Rs 2250/- and the tank was built on 23.08.07. Prof Luiz and Dr Andreas from Belo Horizonte visited the project. The water is good and tasty and the family only uses this water for drinkng and cooking purpose. About 20 to 35 litres a day. While Fluoride has been proven to have a minimal effect in the prevention of tooth decay, the negative effects of the chemical are legion according to several medical studies, far outweighing any positive aspects. A recent Scientific American study "Concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid -- the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism." The report also notes that "a series of epidemiological studies in China have associated high fluoride exposures with lower IQ." 50 per cent of the fluoride taken in on a daily basis remains in the body for life, accumulating in the skeleton. This can cause, skeletal fluorosis, a crippling and painful condition. "Epidemiological studies and tests on lab animals suggest that high fluoride exposure increases the risk of bone fracture, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and diabetics," writes Dan Fagin. Fagin interviewed Steven Levy, director of the Iowa Fluoride Study which tracked about 700 Iowa children for sixteen years. Nine-year-old "Iowa children who lived in communities where the water was fluoridated were 50 percent more likely to have mild fluorosis... than [nine-year-old] children living in nonfluoridated areas of the state," writes Fagin.
