GREEK - TURKISH Turkish songs recorded by Greeks in USA (old) A series of Turkish songs recorded in America by Greek immigrants in the 1920s. Marika Papagika was from the island of Kos (born when it was still Ottoman), Achilleas Poulos, who recorded mostly in Turkish, was from Bursa (maybe Bandirma), Amalia Baka was a Greek speaking Romaniote Jew from Yanina, Epiros who was known as Kyria Amalia in her earlier recordings, M. Cazes sang for most of the recordings by the Stamboul Quartet whose members were mostly Sephardic or Romaniote Jews. Most immigrants from the then Ottoman Empire were non-Moslem, but had a shared musical culture with Moslem Turks, especially urban music.
