Carbon offset: Music to green ears Jul. 6 - World citizens inspired by the Live Earth series of global environmental concerts may want to consider carbon offsets as a way to reduce their ecological imprint. The practice of carbon offsetting measures one's output of carbon, which is believed to cause global warming, and then pays for projects elsewhere that produce a comparable amount of renewable energy, resulting in one becoming "carbon neutral." Conway G. Gittens reports from New York Tags: green energy Live Earth carbon footprint |

Roy Oldham, leader of TMBC on Carbon Offsetting This is taken from a part of the 'state of the area address' of the leader of Tameside MBC, Roy Oldham, on 21st November 2006. Oldham had said in local press that he didn't care if wildlife was affected by the construction of the Longdendale Bypass. TMBC are one of the main advocates for the bypass which will trash a nature reserve, Swallows Wood. In his speech, he announces that 4,500 trees have already been planted and this would be increased to 10,000 to compensate for the loss of trees when the bypass is built and also to help mitigate the the CO2 increases. He also claims that each tree planted would offset 75kg of CO2 per annum. This is an example of 'Greenwash'. This figure - for trees to be planted in northern England - is 3.5 times greater than that for trees planted in tropical rainforests. Putting aside the rather dodgy concept of 'carbon offsetting', it's worth examining Oldham's methodology. Using DEFRA's data to enable CO2 emissions entailed by the bypass to be offset(CO2 collection at a rate of 10 tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year), 1600 hectares of forest would be required (an area roughly the size of a local town, Glossop). With a planting density of 4200 trees per hectare, this would require 6.7 million trees to be planted.
