Overpass tragedy report due The Quebec government will release a highly anticipated report into a deadly overpass collapse on Thursday, following an inquiry that lasted six months. - The government called the inquiry to investigate the circumstances that caused the Highway 19 overpass in Laval to collapse on Sept. 30, 2006, killing five people and injuring six. - The inquiry was asked to determine a cause and make recommendations to avoid future disasters. April 26, 1991 Overpass Tornado DON'T EVER TRY THIS WHEN OUTRUNNING A TORNADO!!! On April 26, 1991, a violent outbreak of 55 tornadoes ripped through the Central Plains; killing 24 people and injuring hundreds. Among the twisters, this one; which was the Andover Tornado after it reached El Dorado Lake just before 7 P.M. Video taken by local storm chasers shows that the tornado crossed over the lake and revealed a multiple vortex structure. Just after crossing over the lake to the Northeast, the original circulations dissipated and a new, much weaker tornado formed. The Andover tornado had traveled for nearly 46 miles, and was on the ground for over an hour. This one moved Northeast toward Cassoday, KS. A news team from KSNW-TV; cameraman Ted Lewis and reporter Greg Jarrett in Wichita were returning to the station along the Kansas Turnpike from a story unrelated to the tornado. They soon encountered the tornado, and Ted decided to try to shoot video of the storm. However, the tornado veered and began following a path along the highway at a speed faster than they could drive. They reached an overpass where several people had already abandoned their cars. Ted advised the other people that they should all get into the very upper part of the overpass, thinking that this would shield them from the wind. The cameraman recorded the entire chain of events as the tornado passed nearby. The overpass itself did not receive a direct hit from the tornado, but it appeared to on camera. It lasted approximately 20 seconds. The tornado then continued northeast and dissipated at about 7:30 p.m., just Northeast of the Cassoday Interchange of the Kansas Turnpike. All the cars parked under the underpass had their windows blown out. Other cars and big rigs on the turnpike (actually hit by the tornado) rolled multiple times and were tossed all over the road. It should be noted that it is now believed that highway overpasses provide little, if any, protection from tornadic winds, and the National Weather Service advises against using overpasses for shelter. Fortunately, for Ted and Greg they survived; partly because this was just a baby twister. This was an F2 tornado which started NorthEast of El Dorado to East of Matfield Green. a TV crew thought an overpass would be a good shelter from a tornado but it turned the overpass into a mini-wind tunnel. They could've gone into the ditch or have continued trying to outrun the tornado. As for Ted and Greg, they've gone seperate ways. Greg Jarrett has since moved on to FOX News. When completed, it will connect Bryan blvd with I40. This will allow traffic for the new fedex hub being constructed at Greensboro's Piedmont Triad International airport much easier access to I40. You must see it in person to appreciate the 12ft tall beams that are connected in 6 sets of 3 i-beams southbound and 7 sets of 3 i-beams northbound, for a total of 39. I remember seeing "45 1/2 tons" written on one of the massive iron beams as it sat on the ground awaiting assembly. I talked to a foreman, and he told me the span is approx. 291 feet(89 meters)! This is one BIG bridge! Normally, unsupported spans of this length require a suspension or truss support.
