Council Boss spends £5000 of Tax-Payers money on Scientology A Town Hall Chief is spending £5,000 of TAX-PAYERS money to attend a Scientology self-awareness course in Florida so that people will like her more and she will learn to "like herself". What a perfect waste of money. Dr Allison Fraser, who has been in charge of Sandwell Council in the West Midlands for the last two years, will attend courses to learn how to become "more likeable". Chief Executive, Dr Fraser, who has an annual salary of £140,000, has already spent a week in Willingen, Germany, earlier this month, to take part in the first section of her course and will resume it in Orlando, Florida in October. In Florida, she will discover if she can truly "be liked and like herself". Dr Francis, who will stay at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, will be able to "experience a recovery of enthusiasm and inspiration for her personal vision and for her experience of the World'. Yesterday, critics of the council leader, claimed that she had "lost touch with reality" by attending the controversial Church of Scientology course. The Scientology Avatar website claims their course teaches people how to become "more real and authentic" and will "protect them against the abrasions of the world" and "gain a connection with the undefined self". The course also claims to teach students how to "obtain the keys to successfully operate in the world". If this terminology makes sense to anybody watching this video, I'd love them to explain it to me in the Queen's English. The course Dr Francis is taking was established by Harry Palmer, a former missionary in the Church of Scientology, and it is further claimed he devised the theory during a prolonged session in a flotation tank. Does having a bath make you smarter then? The Scientology website yesterday contained some of Mr Palmer's words of wisdom including the statement, "There seems to be some kind of evolution going on in consciousness; some sort of collective adaptation that we're developing or awakening to wisdom." Yesterday Dr Fraser was unavailable for comment on the course as she looked forward to gaining further "wisdom" by travelling to Orlando (and was packing her suitcase). However, Tony Mallam, a chairman at Sandwell's council's social club, which faces closure through budget cuts, stormed: 'It beggars belief. I think she has lost touch with reality. She should be concentrating on Sandwell, not flying round the world." I don't know about you, but I'm with Tony. I think Dr Francis simply needs to get out more and meet people. Councillor Mary Docker, of the opposition Conservative group, added: "I looked on the website and I thought it was quite funny, it's so Americanized." In America, campaigners against Mr Palmer's radical Scientology course have set up an on-line petition to get the Course investigated, describing it as a "quasi-religious cult." Other critics have described the five week 'Look Good, Feel Good' course as "ridiculous". Normally, I would suggest that the last thing any politician needs is a course that will turn him or her into an even more insufferable and self-satisfied prick. I also find it impossible to believe that by spending £5,000 of tax-payers money travelling around the world - and attending these ridiculous courses - will make her MORE popular with her work-mates.
