Colour on the Thames (1935) This film is tricky to describe: is it a boat study, a film-poem, an experiment, a picture postcard? One thing is certain: it's a rare colour snapshot of the Thames and London in the 1930s - and it looks quite magical. Its artistic qualities may look a bit old-fashioned to us today; the slow pace, orchestral music and moody colours definitely belong to a bygone era, strikingly peaceful and undemanding. Yet colour film was still a novelty for audiences in 1935, and the photography (using the new Gasparcolor system) succeeds in accentuating the sharp contrast between the vivid green banks of the countryside and the drab tones of the industrial landscape. (Sonia Genaitay) 'Colour on the Thames' is included on the BFI DVD 'Science is Fiction' - http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/info_4823.html You can watch almost 1000 other complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive free of charge at the new BFI Mediatheque - http://www.bfi.org.uk/mediatheque Tags: BFI London Thames river ships boats sailing Tower Bridge Docklands Gasparcolor Thirties 30s 1930s |

The River Thames - May 2007 *** A low-resolution version of a high-definition video podcast available at http://www.londonlandscapetv.info *** The River Thames flows through the heart of London, a great water artery that provides a wide foreground to the many landmark bridges and buildings that it flows past on its way to the English Channel. We start our visual journey looking at Waterloo Bridge with St. Paul's Cathedral and the CIty of London beyond. Next, we step down to the river's sandy south shore and look up at the Hungerford Bridge with its recent Golden Jubilee Pedestrian Suspension Bridge extensions. We then stay on the beach as we look once again at Waterloo Bridge. Our next view consists of three shots looking further along the south shore towards Blackfriars Bridge with the buildings of the City of London dominating the background. This sandy / stoney south shore is open to the public at low tide. Our next bridge is the Millennium Bridge, a 330m steel structure erected in time to celebrate the coming of the year 2000, linking the City of London at St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside. We return to view the river craft ploughing up and down the Thames, this time passing the "Traitors Gate" - a historical river entrance to the Tower of London. Next to Tower of London is Tower Bridge, where we take a southerly view of this impressive structure before we close-in to the roadway capable of being raised to let tall ships through. Our next view is of the World War II battle cruiser HMS Belfast, now occupying a more peaceful role as a floating tourist attraction. Fountains line many parts of the South Bank of the river, this shot being of one by the London Bridge City Pier. Close to Tower Bridge is the curved modern structure of London's City Hall, home of London's Government, the London Assembly. Finally we take a moment to join in the celebrations that form part of the opening of Potters Fields, a new Thames-side park between Tower Bridge and City Hall. Seahorses found in the Thames! A number of short-snouted seahorses (Hippocampus hippocampus) have recently been discovered in the Thames during routine ZSL conservation surveys. ZSL didn't announce the findings publicly when they occurred because the creatures were not protected by the Act. Usually found in shallow muddy waters, estuaries or seagrass beds, their presence in the Thames estuary is another good sign that the water quality of the river is improving - but any disturbance to their habitats could be disastrous. Conservationists are relieved that the animals now have the full protection of the law and hope that announcing their previously hush-hush existence in the Thames will remind people how important it is to maintain the cleanliness of British waterways. ZSL's Marine and Freshwater Conservation Programme Manager, Alison Shaw, said: "These amazing creatures have been found in the Thames on a number of occasions in the last 18 months during our regular wildlife monitoring work. It demonstrates that the Thames is becoming a sustainable biodiverse habitat for aquatic life. It is not clear how endangered short-snouted seahorses are because there is little data known, particularly in the UK, so every scrap of information is valuable. Now they are protected conservationists are more relaxed about telling the world they are there." http://www.zsl.org Tags: seahorse zsl zoological society of london thames short snouted |
