Make Podcast: Graffiti Research Lab Throwies at the Maker Fa James Powderly sat down with me and walked me through the process of making throwies. They are easy to make and fun to throw on things. Graffiti Research Labs brought in a bus and they let people make throwies to throw on things. In this video, James explains that throwies are more than little lights to throw around. GRL takes it conceptually deeper by exploring political issues around prison time for graffiti artists and bringing them to communities around New York. Tags: grl throwies make makerfaire |

LED Throwies (Alternative Uses) A LED throwie is a small LED attached to a coin battery and magnet (usually with conductive epoxy or electrical tape), used for the purpose of creating non-destructive graffiti and light displays. They were devised by the Graffiti Research Lab as a new kind of graffiti art to be used on ferromagnetic surfaces. Part of GRL's original campaign involved distributing throwies to a group of people, who were then encouraged to throw them onto a metal sculpture, called Alamo, located at Astor Place on the isle of Manhattan in New York City. The low cost of materials and the ease with which throwies can be constructed have led to concern over their potential environmental impact. The spent Throwies might not later be collected and eventually the lithium batteries would leak. Some types of lithium batteries are toxic and should never be left in the countryside as they need to be disposed into special recycling bins for batteries. While the devices are single-use, they can be collected later so that the LEDs and magnets can be reused and the batteries can be disposed of properly. IEC LR series alkaline batteries can be used to reduce environmental risks. LED Throwies - Welcome Home LA - welcomehomela.org November 19, 2007 Downtown Los Angeles, Skid Row A group of L.A. students and artists took to the streets to bring attention to the homeless epidemic on Skid Row. They created imageries of windows - symbols of homes, security and hope - using the guerilla art tactic of light graffiti, also known as "throwies." In Downtown Los Angeles, 6,000 homeless people live in an area of less than one square-mile known as Skid Row. It is the most concentrated population of the destitue in the western United States. It has been reported that local hospitals and law enforcement agencies form nearby suburban areas have been caught "dumping" homeless individuals in Skid Row upon their release. Every night, 80,000 homeless are spending the night on the streets of LA County while, just across town, some of the wealthiest people in the country remain oblivious to the situation. Welcome Home LA is a part of the What If? Project, sponsored by Threshold Interactive and the USC School of Fine Arts. It aims to push students into the art of interactive media. "What if?" is the title of the project and the mantra at the core of Threshold's culture - aimed at pushing new ideas forward by embracing both the measured and creative hemispheres of the brain. http://www.welcomehomela.org http://thresholdinteractive.com http://graffitiresearchlab.com Tags: throwies graffiti LEDs LED lights skid row los angeles downtown la usc students art artists |
