The first star identified to be at this stage was T-Tauri, hence the name. During the T-Tauri stage, stars are extremely active and variable, but do not undergo nuclear reactions in their cores until they enter the main sequence. They are driven by gravitational collapse (the K-H contraction mechanism). The winds generated by T-Tauri stars are theorised to be strong enough to stimulate production of warm water vapour in the nebulae around them. In this video, we look at some outright lies and general creationist assbaggery about Venus, straight from the mouth of the good preacher, Spike Psarris. Dr. James Kasting's website, with plenty of great research to read, can be found here: http://www.geosc.psu.edu/~kasting/PersonalPage/Kasting.htm Specifically, the paper of direct interest can be downloaded here: http://www.geosc.psu.edu/~kasting/PersonalPage/Pdf/Icarus_88.pdf If you don't mind following a little atmospheric science, it's a highly recommended read. *About Venus' collision: Of course, we cannot directly observe events in the Solar System which happened millions of millenia ago. Current theory is a product of indirect evidence (such as the retrograde motion or high axial tilt - depending on how you look at it) combined with models for planet formation. It's harder to reconcile Venus with biblical creation though, because your conclusion will be in the region of the creator deliberately attempting to confuse its creation, and stifle their academic progress; hardly a loving act. Studying the atmospheric composition of Venus further will shed some light on its ancient history. I would suggest the greatest puzzles with Venus are its highly circular orbit (also a property of fellow freak planet, Uranus) and the fact that it has no moons (which are thought to be products of catastrophic collisions). The planet may well have formed as the result of two large objects actually 'sticking' together. I myself, and the scientific community have no intention of hiding these questions from the public. But I ask that you remember that a gap in our knowledge about something, particularly with no direct evidence, in no way validates jumping to wild conclusions. Future generations will be laughing at people like Spike even harder than we are now. Sorry I was speaking rather quickly in the final segment, but I realised I didn't have all that much time left to stay within 10 minutes so it was a little rushed. Hopefully I got the main points across. **History of Planet X** Planet X was first proposed in the 1840s to explain the measurement of perturbations in Uranus' orbit. Almost immediately after first searching in the predicted location, Neptune was discovered in 1846. At first, it was believed that some remaining discrepancies in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune could be explained by the presence of yet another planet. However the discovery of Pluto in 1930 did not solve the problem, as Planet X was predicted to be around 7 times the mass of Earth. The problem would not be solved until 1993, when data from the 1989 Voyager 2 flyby of Neptune revealed that its mass had been miscalculated. After revising the mass (0.5% lighter - comparable to the mass of Mars), the orbital discrepancies vanished. Today, no evidence for a Brown Dwarf companion to our Sun exists. Likewise, their has been no measurement of Planet X to date. Future observations may yeild the discovery of a distant planet (as outlined by Lykawka). Q&A with AW 01 The first in a line of videos addressing frequently asked questions, and great science questions. Yes, I'm aware of the spelling error made on the very first slide in the very fourth word. Epic fail on my part. Unfortunately, I tend to read over my mistakes when I stare at something for hours. It shall be preserved as a testament to my fallibility :3 *A note about "true colour" images. Though the images are produced to represent true or approximately true colours, you will often find they appear white to your eye through a telescope. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, light from the stars and most other objects is just too faint to excite the colour receptors in your eyes, and secondly your brain is extremely capable of 'white balancing' what you see. To demonstrate this to yourself, try taking a picture of a fluorescent lamp the next time you see one. Though it appears white to your eyes, your camera will show you that it is actually green! I apologise, this is just completely wrong. It was thought up until 1965 that Mercury was tidally locked to the Sun, but was proven to have 3:2 spin orbit resonance. That means for every 2 years on Mercury, there are 3 days. One Mercurian year is about 88 Terran days and one Mercurian day about 59 Terran days. I think I was once told that Mercury *was* thought to be tidally locked with the Sun, and confused that to mean it was the current consesus. Again, sorry! Welcome to Hubble's Universe After a gigantic US and European joint effort, the Hubble Space Telescope (named for renowned astronomer Edwin Hubble) was launched in 1990 and began photographing the Universe with unprecedented detail and resolution. As a testament to Hubble's work cataloging and classifying huge numbers of galaxies in the 1920s, HST has imaged hundreds of thousands of extra-galactic objects, as well as many in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Perhaps the single most astonishing disproof of creationism; light that left galaxies as long as 13.7 Billion years ago combined with HST's technological eyes have brought scientists closer than ever before to understanding the early Universe.
