2008 Walk Now for Autism - West Plains, MO West Plains Walk Now for Autism Nearly Doubles Funds Raised Hundred of families and supporters in the West Plains, Mo. community gathered for the 4th annual West Plains Walk Now for Autism at the West Plains Civic Center on Saturday, September 27. The walkers, on 20 teams, raised over $22,000. Special thanks to Walk sponsor C & K Clothing, which made a financial contribution and provided snacks and refreshments on Walk day. Walkers enjoyed the events Cowboy Carnival theme, which featured numerous entertainers, Western-themed games for children, stock cars, fire trucks and Stagecoach Rick, who brought an interactive stagecoach. Walkers also met Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and other Disney characters. After the Walk, in the afternoon, the neighboring town of Mountain View its Pioneer Days event, where one of the West Plains Walk teams (West Plains Bank) had their own autism walk/parade as part of the larger event. Returning Walk Chair Shanna Head provided a wonderful introduction of the committee members and details regarding other community events supporting Autism Speaks. The Missouri State University West Plains cheerleaders performed three times and rallied the crowd before the Walk. 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Rochester NY Rochester Walk Now for Autism Raises Over $200,000 On Saturday, September 27, 1,800 people enjoyed the 6th annual Rochester Walk Now for Autism at Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y. The walkers, on more than 200 teams, raised over $200,000 a 24% increase over the 2007 Walk. Despite rainy weather which forced the Walk into the gymnasium, walkers ventured outside to enjoy bounce houses and The Talking School Bus. Children also enjoyed a sensory area, arts and crafts, and the antics of Gary the Happy Pirate. The Rochester Walk welcomed back NBC10s Jennifer Johnson as the events emcee. Other local luminaries in attendance included Scientific Advisory Board member Dr. Susan Hyman of the University of Rochester and J-Mac. The Walk hosted a resource fair,which showcased 18 companies and organizations, including CARD, Clinical Associates of the Finger Lakes, New York State Association for Behavior Analysis, Upstate Communication resource, University of Rochester and UNYFEAT. 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Greater Hudson Valley Inaugural Greater Hudson Valley Walk Now for Autism Raises Over $110,000 The inaugural Greater Hudson Valley Walk Now for Autism took place on Saturday, September 27 in two locations the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area in Stony Point, New York. and a satellite location at the Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York. Together the two events drew more than 800 enthusiastic attendees on 92 walk teams and raised more than $110,000. Rockland County Legislator and Camp Venture President John Murphy addressed the crowd during opening ceremonies. Sullivan County Legislator Leni Binder and 98th District Assembly member Aileen Gunther also shared their enthusiasm and support with the crowd. Walkers were entertained with music by Jeffrey Friedberg and the Bossy Frog Band. The resource fair showcased a variety of booths including The Anderson Center for Autism, Columbia University Medical Center and District 18 Challenger Little League. 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Cleveland, OH 7,000 Walkers in Cleveland Raise more than $354,000 On Sunday, September 28, 7,000 people walked at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, for the 2nd annual Cleveland Walk Now for Autism. The walkers, on nearly 350 teams, raised over $354,000. Entertainment at the Walk was varied and plentiful and included childrens games and bounce houses. Music was provided by a competition singing group from Mentor High School and DJ Nick Zappitelli. Children met Star Wars characters, monkeys and a kangaroo. Seth Qwast, a local artist with autism, displayed his artwork. The event was emceed by Eileen McShea and Bill Safos, on-air personalities from WKYC-3. Alex Kulik from the Cleveland Clinic Center spoke during the opening ceremonies. The Walk hosted a resource fair which showcased 34 companies and organizations, including Natures Bin, which provided gluten free snacks, Cleveland Clinic, Akron Childrens Hospital, Morgan Stanley, Music Therapy and Vitamin Water. A number of generous sponsors contributed to the success of the Cleveland Walk Now for Autism, especially Childrens Hospital at the Cleveland Clinic, which served as a Gold Sponsor. 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Sacramento, CA Inaugural Sacramento Walk Now for Autism Raises Over $355,000 Although it was over 96 degrees in the blazing sun, nearly 5,000 people showed their support at the Inaugural Sacramento Walk Now for Autism on Sunday, September 28. The Walk, which took place at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute, a prestigious state-of-the-art research organization in Sacramento, Calif., raised over $355,000. Pat Still from KNCI Radio and Sarah Gardner, a former news anchor for KCRA-TV who helped to co-found the M.I.N.D. Institute, emceed the event. Tracey MacDonald, Autism Speaks National Director of Community Development, spoke during the opening ceremonies. Music and entertainment were provided by Capitol City DJ, Natomas Charter School Vocal Ensemble, 501st Legion (Vaders Troop) Stormtroopers, Superman, Spiderman, Tinkerbell, Belle, and of course, Geoffrey the Giraffe. Autism Speaks supporter Marty Seagraves autism awareness motorcycle was on display at the Walk site. The M.I.N.D. Institute hosted registration, and participants were able to take and order commemorative team photos, play in six bounce houses and other structures, walk throughout the beautiful and shaded neighborhoods surrounding the M.I.N.D. Institute, and enjoy a barbecue lunch and snow cones afterwards! 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Ft. Wayne, IN Fort Wayne Walk Now For Autism Increases Participation by 72% On Saturday, September 27, 1,200 people enjoyed the 3rd annual Fort Wayne Walk Now for Autism at Foster Park in Fort Wayne, Ind. The walkers, on more than 100 teams, raised $70,000 - $7,000 more than at the 2007 Walk. At the opening ceremonies, Sandy Thompson, a senior member of the "Live Doppler 15 Fury Storm Team of Fort Wayne News 15 and the grandmother of a child on the spectrum, introduced the top five fundraising teams. Then Jennifer Brown, a member of the Three Rivers Wesleyan Church team, sang the national anthem. Children met special guest mascots, including Baby Cow from Chick-fil-A, Charlie Chip from IHOP and Teddy Trooper from the Indiana State Police. Children also enjoyed three bounce houses, an extensive playground, toys provided by The Dollar Store and a performance by Kirk Hughes, who sang childrens songs and played the guitar. The cheerleading squads from Elmhurst High School and Bishop Luer High School cheered on the walkers and the Wayne High School football team volunteered to lead the kids games and greet walkers. As a special treat, Fort Wayne walkers were treated to hot pancakes cooked by local area IHOP restaurants. Team IHOP, led by Vance MacKubbin, was the top fundraising team. The Walk also hosted a resource fair, which showcased 20 companies and organizations, including the Indiana State Police, Parkview Hospital, Autism Tissue Program, Boy Scouts of America, Adaptive ABA, Hand In Hand Preschool and Fresh New Start L.L.C. 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Jersey Shore 4,000 Walkers Raise $400,000 at New Jersey Shore Walk Now for Autism Despite the rainy weather, 4,000 participants came out for the 3rd annual New Jersey Shore Walk Now for Autism in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., , where one of the main roads in town was closed for the event. The 3-mile route took walkers down Ocean Avenue as well as along the boardwalk. It was a wonderful for the families to really feel that their voices were being heard. The walkers, on 250 teams, raised $400,000 on Walk day a 19% increase over 2007s Walk. Each of the Walks in the state of New Jersey is located in a community with its own cultural flavor. Typically, people attend the Walk in their own region but because Point Pleasant Beach is a well-known family beach weekend destination, the New Jersey Shore Walk draws people from all over the state. First Ladies from Around the World Take on Autism First Ladies from around the world came together this morning to voice their support in the battle against autism at the UN Millenium Hotel in New York City. CNN's Chief International Correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, moderated a two hour breakfast featuring remarks from the wife of the UN Secretary General, Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, the First Lady of Iceland, Madame Dorrit Moussaieff, and the First Lady of Panama, Mrs. Vivian Fernandez de Torrijos. The "United Nations World Focus on Autism" breakfast also included brief remarks from Autism Speaks Co-Founders, Bob and Suzanne Wright. A panel discussion with leaders in the fields of autism research and public awareness concluded the morning event, with a short question and answer session. 2008 Walk Now for Autism - Minnesota Minnesota Walk Now for Autism Gallops Out of the Gate On Saturday, September 20, 2,500 people walked the track at Canterbury Park, a thoroughbred racetrack in Shakopee, Minn. for the 2nd annual Minnesota Walk Now for Autism, raising $190,000. In a nod to the location, the Walk, which featured family-friendly entertainment and a large resource fair, was centered around a horse racing theme. Walk Now for Autism 2008 - Nashville TN Inaugural Tennessee Walk Now for Autism Doubles Fundraising and Participation Goals More than 2,000 people walked on Saturday, September 13 at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn. for the inaugural Tennessee Walk Now for Autism. The walkers, from more than 250 teams, raised over $300,000, exceeding the events first year goals. Evan Farmer from TLC's "While You Were Out participated in the opening ceremonies and signed autographs for walkers. Walk Now for Autism 2008 - Southwest Missouri 500 Walkers Raise More than $55,500 at Southwest Missouri Walk Now for Autism In 2007, the Southwest Missouri Walk survived a torrential downpour. This year, the 2008 Southwest Missouri Walk Now for Autism found itself facing heavy residual rain from Hurricane Ike. However, the walkers persevered, and on Saturday, September 13, 500 people gathered at Jordan Valley Park in Springfield, Mo. and raised $55,560 an 18% increase over last years event. Special thanks to Walk Chair Amy Burnett for making the Southwest Missouri Walk such a success. Joe and Christine Daues, local television anchors for KSPR 33, the Springfield ABC affiliate, emceed the Walk day festivities. KSPR 33 promoted Autism Speaks and the Walk for the entire month leading up to the event. Family entertainment was varied and plentiful; Springfield Little Theaters Youth Troupe presented children singing and dancing in performances from musicals such as Annie and High School Musical. Bruce Blakemore performed on acoustic guitar and sang, and a bounce house provided hours of entertainment for children of all ages. Representatives from Jack Henry & Associates were in attendance to present a $32,000 donation to help fund the efforts of Autism Speaks.
