Irish Republican Media - O'Connell Street On 25 February 2006, loyalists from Northern Ireland attempted to march down O'Connell Street in Dublin. This group known as FAIR is a bias, bigoted organisation that attempts to rewrite history and make claims that those in Northern Ireland who claim to be british have suffered at the hands of the Irish for centuries. They organise marches through Catholic areas in efforts to spread their hate mongering much like the KKK did through black areas in Mississippi back in America during the 1950's. Their marches include many loyalist bands singing anti-Catholic/anti-Irish songs, carrying loyalist paramilitary memorabilia, and many that participate in these marches have ties with or were themselves former loyalist paramilitaries who have killed Irish men, women, and children merely for being Irish and Catholic. This 'love parade' as they labeled it, involved having pro-british bands march down O'Connell Street to the GPO while singing anti-Irish songs and carried pictures of the loyalist paramilitaries who bombed Dublin just years ago and killed many relatives of those who live there today. Needless to say thousands of Irish men and women from across the nation came out in a matter of minutes and filled O'Connell Street to stop this event. In the end, due to the overwhelming amount of people that showed up to protest this blatant display of racism, the group was forced to board their buses and go home. Shell To Sea Protest (Nov 10 2006) - Gard Baton Charge On November 10th 2006, 11th anniversary of the murder of activist Ken Saro wiwa, Shell To Sea activists met to protest the Corrib pipeline being forced into their community. Police baton charged the peaceful protesters and sent many to the hospital with injuries ranging from broken bones to concussions, although the Irish mainstream media reports different. Rossport Solidarity Camp - Shell To Sea Video In Mayo Shell and Statoil, with the approval of the Irish government, are planning to: Take land from local residents and build a high pressure gas pipeline that will go past their houses: The pressure inside the pipeline will be up to four times greater than that of the biggest Bord Gais pipelines. The pipeline will be going through boggy land with a history of landslides. Construct a gas refinery on unstable bog: This construction will be using previously untried methods to stabilise the bog surface and involve a massive amount of traffic. Emissions from the refinery will affect the nearby Carrowmore Lake, source of the regional water supply. Pump toxic waste into Broadhaven Bay: A U.C.C. research team found that Broadhaven Bay was an important breading and rearing area for dolphins and whales. They recorded over 220 sightings of seven whale and dolphin species, plus sightings of two seal species, in Broadhaven Bay and north-west Mayo waters. The government is giving them our gas for practically nothing and then we will have to buy it back: From 1975 for oil and gas companies there was a tax rate of 50%, an automatic 50% state stake in any commercial well, and royalties of 6 %-- 7%. In 1987, after lobbying by the companies, Ray Burke got rid of the 50% state stake and removed royalties. In 1992 after further lobbying Bobby Molloy reduced the tax rate to 25% and 100% tax write offs were introduced, meaning that the companies can subtract their costs from their tax bill. In other places in Europe the state take can be 55% or even 79% of a field. Shell have been given permission by the High Court to start work on the on land parts of the pipeline in about a months time, construction is due to start on the landfall, where the off-shore pipeline hits the beach, on May 31st. Help the local people to stop Shell! Who Pays the Piper? On a side note this issue totally demonstrates the importance of the independence of Indymedia. Providence Resources are an oil and gas exploration company with interests in potential fields off the south and west coasts of Ireland. There is the possibility that what is happening in Erris, Mayo, will only be the first instance of corporations cutting corners at the expense of the environment and local communities as they exploit the potential oil and gas reserves off the coast, particularly the west coast, of Ireland. Irish Republican Media - Gibraltar, Miltown, and SAS On March 7th 1988 the brit forces (SAS) shot dead 3 suspected IRA members as they walked towards the Spanish border - a crime that was later deemed 'legal' by british courts due to a 'shoot on sight' policy implemented by the british government. During the funeral proceedings loyalist criminal michael stone was allowed through by the brit security forces surrounding the ceremony and lobbed hand grenades and fired off automatic weapons at the families of the deceased - including many women and children. Today, murderer michael stone lives in england - where he is taken care of by the british government. He release a book in 2003 detailing his murders of Irish citizens and advocating Irish genocide in Northern Ireland. Ironically, he originally claimed during a multination book publicity tour that sales from the book would go to his victims families. To date, not one cent has been received by any of his victims, and the british government hides him, as well as pays him, to stay out of sight in their 'protective' custody. Irish Republican Media - Battle Of The Bogside The Battle of the Bogside was a battle between the mostly unarmed residents of the Bogside area of Derry city in Northern Ireland and the Royal Ulster Constabulary. The Battle took place in Derry, Northern Ireland, 12 August-14 August 1969, after the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) attempted to force a loyalist Apprentice Boys of Derry parade through a nationalist area of the city. Irish Republican Media - Falls Road Curfew The Falls curfew took place on July 3-5 1970. Four civilians were shot dead by the British army and one killed by an armoured car. Three hundred people were arrested without any charges against them. All males between the ages of 18 and 30 were arrested merely for living in the area. Those living in the Nationalist Falls Road area of Belfast were subjugated to mandatory curfew. Anyone out past dusk were shot on site by brit troops.
