Audi A6 @ 2008 Paris Auto Show READ MORE @ http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=132189 It's not easy to get too excited by the 2009 Audi A6. Yes, some 234,000 examples of Audi's executive barge were sold around the world last year, more than either the BMW 5 Series or the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. But while the A6 sets the tone of Audi's styling look, it lacks the luxury chutzpah of the Audi A8 or the sporting finesse of the smaller Audi A4. Saab 9X Air Premieres @ Paris Auto Show FOR SAAB AND MORE AT 2008 PARIS AUTO SHOW: www.insideline,com PARIS — Saab has come up with the convertible showstopper at the 2008 Paris Auto Show in the form of the 9-X Air BioHybrid Concept. The Swedish automaker describes the groundbreaking concept as "a design vision exploring what a future open-air Saab could look like." Intriguing details include what Saab says is a patent-pending "canopy top" made of fabric to save weight and improve packaging. It folds into three small sections under a rear tonneau cover in the trunk deck. The iconoclastic design includes prominent rear pillars that curve upward to mount the canopy top. The four-passenger 9-X Air also skips a trunk lid in favor of a sliding drawer that is big enough for two golf bags — the gold standard in convertible trunk design. The 9-X Air is the sister vehicle of the 9-X BioHybrid Concept, which was shown at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show. The new concept uses a 1.4-liter Saab BioPower engine that uses E85. The engine delivers 200 horsepower and goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than 8.1 seconds. That's all fine and good, but when we head to the City of Lights this October it will be for one thing and one thing only: the 2008 Paris Auto Show. With no competition from Frankfurt or Tokyo, the Paris auto show is the only game in town this fall, so there are guaranteed to be several world premieres at the Porte de Versailles convention center. It should be a mix of everything from small and efficient to expensive and powerful. GM has already promised a firsthand look at the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, a small sedan that will go on sale in Europe next year. Not to be outdone in the efficiency game, Honda will unveil an all-new hybrid sedan aimed directly at the Toyota Prius. With a base price under $20,000, it's designed to bring hybrid technology to the masses. On the more expensive side, we'll see the Ferrari California and the 2009 BMW 7 Series. The BMW will be joined by an ActiveHybird version of this car as well as the 3 Series refresh and a concept version of the X1 compact SUV. There will be additional news from Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan. Coverage starts on October 2, so check back then for all the latest from Europe's only major auto show this fall. Ka-Boom! Ford Ka @ 2008 Paris Auto Show MORE PARIS AUTO SHOW COVERAGE AT: www.insideline.com COLOGNE, Germany — The Aston Martin DBS may have been grabbing all the headlines in the run-up to the release of the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. But Ford announced on Thursday that its quirky little Ka will be the ride of the film's leading lady. Ukrainian model Olga Kurylenko, who plays Camille in Quantum of Solace, will drive a showy Ka decked out in a metallic gold paint job with one-of-a-kind exterior graphics. Ford released a picture of Kurylenko behind the wheel wearing massive gold jewelry and a come-hither look. "The new Ka is the perfect match for the character of Camille — adventurous, individual and thoroughly modern," said Stephen Odell, Ford of Europe's chief operating officer, presumably with a straight face. The vehicles of the new Bond movie have been generating as much press as the movie itself. One Aston Martin DBS was totaled during the filming, and another was intentionally crashed. An Alfa Romeo crashed into a wall in another incident. Ford notes that a Ford Mondeo made an appearance in Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace is scheduled to be released on November 7. SMART Electric ForTwo @ 2008 Paris Auto Show CHECK OUT MORE PARIS AUTO SHOW COVERAGE AT: www.insideline.com HAMBACH, France — The electrically powered Smart Fortwo has been delayed because of issues with the battery supplier, Cobasys of southeastern Michigan. Development had progressed to the point that Inside Line has taken the electric-drive Smart out for test-drives in such disparate locales as London, Silicon Valley and Seville, Spain, but it looks as though the mass-market version is still some way off. The Smart Fortwo with Electric Drive is slated to be shown in production trim at the 2008 Paris Auto Show next month. The lithium-ion-equipped Fortwo EV has been optimistically planned for the end of 2009. However, Klaus Badenhausen, Smart chief engineer, told Inside Line that the supplier problems have made it difficult for the company to move ahead with lithium-ion development. The current sodium nickel-hydride battery pack of the plug-in Fortwo has been pleasing lease customers around London on a limited test basis since late 2006. Cobasys is in the midst of determining whether or not it will stay solvent, while its owner, CSC, is reportedly actively seeking to sell off the entire business. This drama has resulted in an indefinite hold being placed on the Daimler lithium-ion battery development. Daimler President and CEO Dieter Zetsche told IL, "The recent developments with our lithium-ion partners have Daimler looking actively into various Plan Bs." While no specifics were given, Badenhausen told IL, "You can imagine, if you like, that we are continuing our own development within Daimler." Whether the Smart Fortwo with Electric Drive actually can hit the market by late 2009 remains as elusive a bet as the Chevy Volt and other lithium-ion projects arriving on schedule. 2009 Ferrari California @ 2008 Paris Auto Show FOR FULL FERRARI AND PARIS AUTO SHOW COVERAGE, CHECK OUT: www.insideline.com Pulled out of its secret workshop and displayed on the grounds of the Ferrari factory just for us, the 2009 Ferrari California stops us all in our tracks. We all just stand there. Mouths open. Like high-schoolers in the presence of bare breasts for the first time. This is a gorgeous car. With Pininfarina bodywork created under the direction of Donato Coco, Ferrari's new design chief, the California is a real stunner, particularly with the roof up. Roof down it loses a trifle of that extraordinary well-balanced beauty, but only a trifle. Unlike other cars with a retractable hardtop, the proportions remain intact when the passengers expose themselves to the sun. For instance, the fender vents are a welcome homage to the car from which the California takes its inspiration, the powerfully evocative Ferrari 250GT SWB Spyder California introduced at the 1960 Geneva auto show. And the long, hollow grooves in the sills have a function, as they direct air to ducts that cool the rear transaxle. No question about it, the newest Ferrari is a looker. Full-figured, but a looker still the same. Tags: 2009 Ferrari California 2008 Paris Auto Show car motor race racing Italian Michael Schumacher |

Mazda Kiyora Concept @ 2008 Paris Auto Show FOR MORE FROM THE PARIS AUTO SHOW: www.insideline.com PARIS — Mazda will unveil a "next-generation urban compact" concept called the Kiyora at the 2008 Paris Auto Show on October 2. The city-car concept is believed to be the first look at a future Mazda 1 minicar. True to poetic form, Mazda is crediting "water" and "harmony" as the inspirations for the design. Mazda's face-lifted MX-5 will also make its global debut here. Other Mazdas making world debuts at Paris will be the Mazda 6 with a new 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine and the Mazda 2 with a 1.6-liter turbodiesel. The Mazda Kiyora concept is notable for its light weight. The car is based on an all-new platform designed for maximum weight reduction, coupled with safety. It is fitted with the next-generation Mazda four-cylinder direct-injection engine and Smart Idle Stop System for fuel economy and lowered emissions, Mazda said. The name "Kiyora" means "clean and pure" in Japanese and is another in Mazda's long-term design vision, the company said in a statement. It is positioned as a "city car cutting cleanly through an urban landscape." Tags: Mazda Kiyora Concept 2008 Paris Auto Show Edmunds Inside Line car motor |

Mercedes FASCINATION Concept @ 2008 Paris Auto Show SEE MORE OF THE PARIS AUTO SHOW: www.insideline.com STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz calls the look of its ConceptFASCINATION showcar "sense and sensuousness," and with good reason. The elegant wagon concept will debut at the 2008 Paris Auto Show next month. Powered by Mercedes' latest four-cylinder diesel engine, Mercedes says this "design study" is intended to show that a coupe can have "fast, thrilling lines" and practicality at the same time. ConceptFASCINATION combines a refrigerated luggage compartment, lots of load space — and a humidor for cigar aficionados — with wood, aluminum and smoked glass interior trim. The exterior design is intended to convey "forward-flowing energy" thanks to its frameless side window line, sculpted wheel arches and wedge-shaped profile. There's also a central ridge in the hood to continue the V-shape theme and a chrome strip running around the lower body into which the front LED foglamps are set. Inside, luxurious materials "from the world of equestrianism" include woven fabrics and saddle-style leather on the aluminum center console, top of the dashboard and door armrests. Walnut and chrome trim are also plentiful inside, and the V theme is continued with the "dynamic wing" styling of the dashboard. Mercedes-Benz says the ConceptFASCINATION is its 21st-century version of the classic shooting brake. No further plans for the design study were announced. Chevrolet Cruze @ 2008 Paris Motor show CHECK OUT MORE PARIS AUTO SHOW COVERAGE: www.insideline.com DETROIT — Three official images of the five-passenger Chevrolet Cruze were released on Thursday in advance of the small car's debut at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. GM's bread-and-butter brand insists that it is making a "strong design statement" with its global vehicle. "Our goal in designing Cruze was to be bold, not evolutionary," said Taewan Kim, Cruze chief designer, in a statement. "We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world." Chevrolet detailed its launch plans for the car, saying that it will debut in Europe in March 2009, followed by other global markets "with regional-specific engine choices." At the same time, General Motors on Thursday confirmed that it will build the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze at its Lordstown, Ohio, facility after a multibillion-dollar investment there. Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager, told WJR-AM in Detroit on Thursday that the Cruze will "sell in over 100 countries. "The market is red hot for small vehicles," he said. Peper also described the Cruze as a "smaller version of [the Chevrolet] Malibu. "It's wider and longer than most of the small cars out there," he said. In a statement, Chevrolet said that the Cruze will be launched in Europe with 112-horsepower 1.6-liter and 140-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engines, along with a new 150-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel. The engines are linked to a five-speed manual transmission or Chevrolet's first six-speed automatic transmission in the compact segment. The exterior design cues on the Cruze include a sculpted hood and two-tier grille. "Inside, Cruze features a 'twin cockpit' design motif, first introduced in the iconic Corvette sports car," said Chevrolet. The Cruze is the replacement for the Chevrolet Cobalt. It will be the first vehicle to use GM's revamped Delta 2 platform, an architecture that will be used on all GM small cars around the globe, including replacements for the Chevrolet HHR and the Opel Zafira and its related siblings. Beth Lowery, GM's vice president of environment, energy and safety policy, told the Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Michigan, earlier this month that the Cruze will get better gas mileage than the Cobalt. High Voltage: Chevy Volt @ 2008 Paris Motor Show CHECK OUT MORE PARIS MOTOR SHOW COVERAGE AT: www.insideline.com You might have heard that General Motors unveiled the production version of some car called the 2011 Chevrolet Volt at the company's recent centennial celebration. But that's not entirely true. It would be more accurate to say that the unveiling of the much-ballyhooed Volt is GM's centennial celebration; such is the significance of this vehicle to the ailing company. Also the Volt as presented is not precisely the version of the plug-in electric car that will go on sale in November 2010 (God, GM and lithium-ion batteries willing). In fact the car that Bob Lutz drove onto the stage at GM's headquarters in downtown Detroit isn't really the Volt that we and the world have come to know, either. Thanks to its inherent appeal and GM's grand publicity push, the image we all have assigned to the name Volt is that of the comely little two-door coupe with the long hood and the big wheel flares from the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. So different is this "production" version that GM's publicity machine has been directed to stop using pictures of the concept car. GM is only about halfway between the unveiling of the concept nearly two years ago and the sale of the first, true production Volt about two years from now. The New VW GTI @ 2008 Paris Motor Show FOR FULL 2008 MOTOR SHOW COVERAGE, CHECK OUT: www.insideline.com WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen will use the 2008 Paris Auto Show as a launch pad for its new sixth-generation 2010 Golf GTI. The new performance-based hatchback follows closely on the heels of the standard sixth-generation Golf, which is also due to get its first public debut in the French capital next week and then go on sale in Europe. Both cars are planned to go on sale simultaneously in North America in October 2009. The GTI is part of an intensive new-model thrust aimed at netting Volkswagen significant sales growth. The automaker's ambitious 10-year business plan aims to achieve 800,000 sales per year in the U.S. by 2018. The Golf GTI to be revealed in Paris is described as a concept. Sources at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters tell Inside Line it is highly representative of the production version that is due to reach European showrooms next April. It's an unwritten law among German carmakers that any car displayed more than six months prior to market introduction is billed as a concept — or studie, as Volkswagen prefers. Powering the latest incarnation of the GTI is VW's new EA888 four-cylinder engine in turbocharged 2.0-liter form. Developed by Audi as part of a world engine program, the transversely mounted unit kicks out 210 horsepower, which is 10 hp more than the current GTI. Torque, however, remains the same, rising to a peak of 206 pound-feet at just 1,800 rpm. As before, drive goes to the front wheels via either a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed double-clutch gearbox that has steering-wheel-mounted paddles and a full automatic mode. The 2010 GTI gets an electronic differential for the first time, called XDS, that operates through an enhanced electronic stability program to help power get to the road cleanly and efficiently. Volkswagen claims the new car will sprint from zero to 60 mph in under 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 149 mph. Combined fuel consumption averages better than 30 mpg on the European cycle. CO2 emissions, on which some European markets base road tax, have dropped to 178g/km. The underpinnings are a development of those used in the old GTI with a combination of MacPherson struts at the front and multilinks at the rear. It sits 0.8 inch closer to the ground than the standard Golf and rolls on unique 18-inch wheels shod with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The new GTI also gets adaptive damping as on the Scirocco. Known under the name DCC (dynamic chassis control), it provides three levels of suspension stiffness: normal, comfort and sport. The system also alters mapping of the steering and throttle for sharper and more immediate responses in sport mode. The GTI will be available in three- and five-door body styles and gets a distinctive body kit. Visual cues include a deep new front bumper with gaping central air duct and vertically stacked foglamps, as well as an altered grille with classic GTI touches. All are design elements that first emerged on the wild midengine W12 650 concept car. Other changes include wider sills underneath the doors, a prominent spoiler atop the hatch and a new rear bumper carrying an altered valance cover bookmarked by twin chromed tailpipes. The sporty theme continues inside with the traditional checkered cloth seats, unique dashboard trim, leather-hooded gearlever and aluminum-finish pedals. The classy instrument graphics and three-spoke multifunction flat-bottom steering wheel are shared with the recently introduced Passat CC and add some upmarket flair. The rest of the cabin is brought over from the standard Golf, including the extensive options list with such high-end items as radar-controlled collision avoidance, a touchscreen navigation system supported by a 30GB hard disk, reverse-view camera and parallel parking assistant. The GTI is not likely to be the last of the hot Golfs headed to North America. Volkswagen is also said to be preparing another new model with an upgraded version of its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with Audi's new valve lift system as a possible replacement for the four-wheel-drive 250-hp 3.2-liter V6-powered R32. The new engine, which is also found in the Audi S3, delivers 265 hp — enough to give the new Golf real kick, as one Volkswagen insider enthuses. Insightful? Honda Insight Concept @ 2008 Paris Motor Show CHECK OUT FULL PARIS MOTOR SHOW COVERAGE AT: www.insideline.com TORRANCE, California — Honda on Thursday lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding its new Prius fighter, saying the compact five-door hatchback — christened the Insight — will make its debut on October 2 at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. Honda said the Insight, which will undercut the price of the Toyota Prius, will go on sale in the U.S. next spring. The new Honda Insight is expected to be priced from under $20,000 and is the first vehicle in Honda's ambitious hybrid strategy. In comparison, the 2009 Toyota Prius starts at $22,660, including a $660 destination charge. Honda plans to roll out four new gas-electric models over the next four years as part of a broad global strategy to boost hybrid sales to 500,000 units by 2012 — which would represent more than 10 percent of its total worldwide annual automobile sales. "Following the launch of the new Insight, Honda also plans to introduce another unique sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z, first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show," the automaker said in a statement. Also in the pipeline is a replacement for the current Civic Hybrid, which is due out in late 2010, and a new hybrid edition of the Honda Fit in 2012. The new Insight is a major leap from the original Insight, a cramped 70-mpg two-seater subcompact that was introduced in December 1999 as America's first gas-electric hybrid car. Honda took pains in its Thursday announcement to describe the new Insight as "roomy." It said the futuristic Insight Concept "shares styling cues with the Honda FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle and will provide an early look at the highly anticipated five-passenger hybrid vehicle." Honda said it was able to hold down the price of the production Insight "by utilizing a more cost-efficient version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology, resulting in a new level of affordability for hybrid customers worldwide." Although it provided few technical specifications, the Japanese automaker also said the production Insight will have "a function to assist customers in achieving more fuel-efficient driving habits." The new Insight will be built in Japan. The Honda Insight is expected to have annual global sales of 200,000 units a year, with about 100,000 of those in North America. New Lamborghini Estoque @ Paris Motor Show FOR FULL LAMBORGHINI AND PARIS MOTOR SHOW COVERAGE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=132648?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* Lamborghini has stunned the automotive world — and not least its supercar rivals Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche — by unveiling a wild concept on the eve of the 2008 Paris Auto Show. It's the Lamborghini Estoque, a concept for a $230,000 four-door sedan. A 5.2-liter V10 should provide the car with enough power to reach 200 mph. The Estoque is officially described as a concept, but it's already under serious consideration for production according to well-placed sources at the company's headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese. The Estoque neatly extends Lamborghini's flamboyant design language and emotional appeal to a highly fancied third model line. Naturally it offers a level of interior accommodation and practicality well beyond that of the midengine Lamborghini Gallardo and Murciélago, yet its dynamic qualities promise to set lofty standards of excellence comparable to the firm's sports cars.
