MIT Autonomous Robot Challenge 6.141 is a class at MIT where students design and program robots that must navigate a maze, detect and gather blocks, and then use these blocks to construct a wall, all without human interaction. This video shows the final results of a semester of work. Tags: mit csail robot robotics ai |

The CarTel Project: Using Cars in a Mobile Sensor Network CarTel is a distributed, mobile sensor network and telematics system. Applications built on top of this system can collect, process, deliver, analyze, and visualize data from sensors located on mobile units such as automobiles. A small embedded computer on the car interfaces with a variety of sensors in the car, processes the collected data, and delivers it to an Internet server. Applications running on the server analyze this data and provide interesting features for users. http://cartel.csail.mit.edu Tags: mit csail cars traffic mobile sensor network |

MIT Humanoid Robotics Competition MIT students spent three weeks building and programming a humanoid robot for an exciting competition. The goal of the workshop was to give students hands-on experience with tackling humanoid robot control problems, such as stably walking on a flat surface, walking up stairs, running, and even fighting! http://courses.csail.mit.edu/6.095 Tags: mit csail humanoid robot robotics |

MIT DARPA Urban Challenge Qualification - Area C, Attempt 1 Area C involved intersection precedence and the vehicle's reactions to road blocks. Talos, MIT's vehicle, performed very well at these tasks. MIT DARPA Urban Challenge Qualification - Area A, Attempt 2 Area A tested Talos' ability to merge into moving traffic. After a too cautious first attempt, the team made some changes and the vehicle performed better in this round. MIT DARPA Urban Challenge Qualification - Area A, Attempt 1 Area A tested Talos' ability to merge into moving traffic. Talos ("the world's most expensive, sophisticated Land Rover in existence," as the DARPA announcer calls it) was a bit too hesitant about merging, requiring the team to make some changes to pass the event. Team MIT is a collaborative effort between MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Department of Mechanical Engineering, along with students and faculty from Olin College and members of the Draper Laboratory. http://grandchallenge.mit.edu Tags: MIT CSAIL DARPA grand challenge autonomous vehicles urban nqe qualifying event talos |

MIT DARPA Urban Challenge Qualification - Area B, Attempt 2 Area B is a residential area of rotaries and winding streets designed to test the vehicle's lane following, navigation, obstacle avoidance, parking, signaling, and turning. Talos, MIT's vehicle, completed the course in 26 minutes, one of only two vehicles that day to do so.

Reconfiguration by Self-Disassembly In this video, each cube is a robotic module that recognizes and connects to its neighbor. Using an computer interface, a user can sculpt the structure into any shape. The structure then disassembles itself into the desired shape by disconnecting and discarding the unneeded cubes. This is research conducted by the Distributed Robotics Lab in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Face Transfer with Multilinear Models This research extracts a 3D model of a person's face from a video. The person's facial expressions and mouth movements can then be transferred to the 3D face model of another person. In this video, the two input videos are shown in the top corners. The facial movements of the person on the left are transferred to the person on the right, creating the main video shown. On each side of the output video are two perspectives of the new 3D face model. Published in SIGGRAPH 2005. Wheel of Life Sand Mandala at MIT A time-lapse video of the creation of a Tibetan Buddhist Wheel of Life sand mandala. It was constructed at MIT by the Venerable Losang Samten and assisted by the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi. The sand painting took five days to create and, as is traditional, was dissolved soon after it was finished. In this video, each frame was taken five minutes apart, chronicling the entire five day construction. For more info: http://web.mit.edu/metta/mandala/ Tags: mit sandpainting mandala buddhism tibet |
