Sullivan's Travels - "New Friends" Hollywood director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) stops in a Hollywood diner after failing to experience the real life of the poor and ends up meeting a would-be actress (Veronica Lake) giving up on the business and leaving town. Writer/director Preston Sturges's 1941 satirical romantic comedy classic was one of Veronica Lake's first lead roles. Her behavior on the set upset most of the cast and crew and McCrea refused to work with her ever again. Supposedly Sturges was so furious with Lake he had to be restrained when it was discovered she was six months pregnant at the start of production, a fact she had kept from him. The film received mixed reviews and less financial success than previous Sturges pieces, but has gained recognition over the years as one of director's classic satirical works.
