Michael Redd Career High 57pts vs Utah Jazz 06/07 NBA The best night in Milwaukee Bucks franchise history was not enough for a win. Michael Redd scored 57 points to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's franchise record, but Matt Harpring made a layup with 1.8 seconds left to give the Utah Jazz a 113-111 victory over the Bucks on Saturday night. "I will probably just go home and thank God," Redd said. "A second-round pick, a guy that didn't know if he was going to make the team or not, to this. I am just grateful. I can't describe it. "But I wanted to win. That's the main thing. It probably would have felt better if I would have won the game." The Bucks almost did, as Redd's 39-point second half helped erase a 24-point, first-half deficit. But Carlos Boozer scored 32 points and Deron Williams had 27 points and a career-high 15 assists to help the Jazz move to 6-1 for just the fifth time in franchise history. The Bucks dropped their fourth straight to fall to 2-5, their worst start since 2000-01. Redd broke the franchise scoring record of 55 set by Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's career scoring leader, against the Boston Celtics on Dec. 10, 1971. Redd made 18 of 32 field goals, going 6-of-12 from 3-point range and 15-of-17 on free throws. It was Redd's first career 50-point game and sixth career 40-point night. He has scored at least 30 points in four of seven games this season. Redd's previous career high of 43 points came in a 116-103 season-ending loss to Washington last April 18. Redd said he has never scored 57 at any level. He said he once scored 56 in an AAU game in high school. "At first I thought it might be a difficult night because I knew they would hone on me," Redd said. "I had no intentions of trying to come in and score 57 points, just play basketball and see what happened. It happened. "A lot of shots were going in, I don't know how." The Jazz dominated much of the game, but saw their big lead evaporate in the fourth quarter behind Redd's 25 points in the period -- including 11 in the first 2½ minutes of the quarter. Utah still led 109-102 with less than two minutes left, but Ruben Patterson hit two free throws to cut the lead to five with 1:08 remaining. Andrew Bogut's dunk and free throw made it 109-107 with 39 seconds left. Williams then missed a 3-pointer on the other end, and Redd was fouled on the rebound but missed the first of two free throws with 12 seconds left to keep it 109-108. Redd then fouled Boozer on the inbounds play, and he made both free throws to put Utah up three with 11 seconds remaining. Redd then curled off a screen and nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 6.9 seconds left to tie it. Williams, however, dribbled quickly down the floor and found Harpring cutting on the baseline for a layup with 1.8 seconds left. "I saw an opening and got a great pass," Harpring said. "I knew I had a back door, caught eyes with D-Williams and he made a great pass." Redd missed a fadeaway 27-footer at the buzzer. "I thought I was going to make it, actually," Redd said. "It felt good, and it just went off to the side." It was not all good news for the Jazz, who lost forward Andrei Kirilenko to what the team called a severely sprained right ankle midway through the second quarter. Kirilenko, who was in a walking boot after the game, appeared to roll the ankle while vying for a loose ball on the left sideline with Milwaukee's Ersan Ilyasova. Williams, a second-year player, continued his solid play. He had 18 points in the first half -- including his first 3-pointer of the season -- one night after sinking 10 of 15 shots and scoring 26 points in a win over the Celtics. Williams had 14 assists Friday. Boozer scored 14 points in the third quarter en route to a season high. But the story was Redd, who outscored all of his teammates, 57-54. "You know, I've seen Michael Jordan and those guys do that, but, Michael Redd, he's just sensational," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I'd say tonight is right up there at the top with any of them in that situation. He brought his team back and gave them life, and they knew they had an opportunity to win." Utah was in control early, taking advantage of a porous Bucks defense for a series of layups and dunks, as fans booed. The Jazz almost put the game out of reach early in the second quarter with a 16-0 run before Redd's charge. "We didn't win the game," Bogut said. "(Redd) played a great game individually, but I am sure he would much rather score 20 points and get a win. He would much rather get a 'W' than have someone score 60." Patterson made his first seven shots and finished with 18 points. Utah rookie Paul Millsap had a career-high 15 points and Harpring had 17. Tracy McGrady 39pts vs Rasheed Wallace Blazers 00/01 NBA Whether Grant Hill plays or not, the Orlando Magic have not looked good. Hill rested his troublesome left ankle and the Magic were no match for the Portland Trail Blazers, who cruised to a 106-96 victory behind Rasheed Wallace's 22 points and 10 rebounds. Hill broke the ankle late last season but played through the pain before giving into it in the playoffs. He had surgery during the offseason and played the first two games of the season but the problems persisted and sidelined him again. After missing five weeks, the All-Star forward returned for this road trip. He scored 19 points in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday but just nine in a loss at Seattle on Tuesday, when he did not have a basket after the first quarter. Without Hill, the Magic have become a one-man team. Swingman Tracy McGrady, who was signed with Hill during the offseason to give Orlando a 1-2 punch, has basically gone at it alone. McGrady scored 39 points -- one off his season high -- but that was not nearly enough to overcome the deep and talented Trail Blazers, who have won four straight games. "I think we're just not bringing it for 48 minutes every game and that's what we have to do," McGrady said. "We have to find some way to get ourselves going for 48 minutes." "I don't think at times we play with enough fire, passion, hatred, whatever it has to be," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "So I think at times I have to fabricate it and that's not going to work if that's what I have to do." Arvydas Sabonis had 18 points and eight boards for the Blazers, who never trailed and pounded the Magic on the glass, 51-33. All of that was too much for Rivers, who was ejected for arguing with 4:06 left in the second quarter. "The bottom line is one of the things I told our guys is that you've got to have fire and to me, that's rebounding -- not reading (in the paper) that you don't have somebody or we might need help at the rebounding positions. "If I was one of those guys that read that, I would rebound. I would knock down. I would grab. I would hold. I would do whatever I had to because that guaranteed them minutes. That's what I'm stressing right now." Wallace scored eight points and Sabonis added six in the first quarter as Portland grabbed a 28-22 lead. John Amaechi's dunk still had Orlando within 42-33 midway through the second period before things fell apart. "I am real pleased with the way we came out," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy, whose team beat the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. "Sometimes after a big win we have a tendency to have a letdown. We came out strong, played great defense and did a great job." Bonzi Wells scored to start a 9-0 burst. Wallace had a pair of baskets around Greg Anthony's foul shot for Rivers' technical and Wells found Sabonis for a layup and a 51-33 lead with 3:01 to go in the first half. Orlando trailed 57-41 at halftime and reduced the deficit by just one point entering the fourth period despite 13 points in the third quarter by McGrady. A 3-pointer by rookie Mike Miller got the Magic within 94-85 with 4:14 to play. Wallace tipped in a miss, Magic forward Bo Outlaw missed two free throws and Dale Davis made a jumper to seal it at 98-85 with 3:20 left. "Rasheed Wallace plays with passion and he just keeps getting better each year," Rivers said. "His post game has developed tremendously. People spend so much time criticizing Rasheed on areas he needs to improve where they should be talking about where he has improved." Damon Stoudamire scored 15 points for Portland, which had six players in double figures and shot 52 percent (41-of-79) from the field. Darrell Armstrong had 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Orlando, which shot 44 percent (34-of-78). LeBron James 43pts vs Paul Pierce 50pts Celtics 05/06 NBA LeBron James and the streaking Cleveland Cavaliers spoiled the highest-scoring game by a Celtics' player in more than 16 years. James had 43 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his fourth triple-double of the season and the Cavaliers overcame Paul Pierce's 50-point performance to beat the Celtics 113-109 in double overtime on Wednesday night. Drew Gooden added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Damon Jones had 13 points for Cleveland. Pierce shot 17-for-36 from the field and 16-for-20 from the free-throw line to become the first Celtic to score 50 since Larry Bird had 50 on Nov. 10, 1989. "I really got into a groove in the second half," Pierce said. "Guys were getting the ball to me. It felt good to me. You know, it would have felt a lot better if we would have been on the other side, but it was just a great game to be a part." Cleveland (31-21) matched its 52-game record from last year. While the Cavaliers closed last season 11-19 and missed the playoffs, this year's team enters the All-Star break in second place in the Central Division. Cleveland coach Mike Brown said this is a game the Cavaliers would have lost last year. "We're not a good road team and so any way we can win on the road, we'll take it," Brown said. "It was a character win because we could have folded." The Celtics trailed by as many as 13, but Pierce scored 31 points after the first half to keep the game close before fouling out with a minute remaining in the second overtime. Boston (20-32) lost its seventh game in nine tries. James, coming off a 44-point performance against San Antonio on Monday night, drew Pierce's final foul with 1:00 remaining and made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Cavaliers up 109-107. On Cleveland's next possession, James sealed the game with a layup in traffic. "We just made the big play at the end," James said. "We just willed a way to win. This was one of the wildest games, especially on the road. But I love it. Being on the road, you got the fans against you and we found a way to win. It was awesome." Wally Szczerbiak scored 17 points and Delonte West added 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Celtics. Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 14 points for Cleveland, but missed a pair of free throws with 7.1 seconds remaining in regulation that would have iced the game. Following Ilgauskas' misses, Pierce drew a foul on James with 0.2 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to send the game into overtime. Cleveland was just 25-of-40 from the free-throw line. "It was a winnable game," West said. "This one is tough to swallow." After a pair of Ryan Gomes layups gave the Celtics a 90-88 lead with 1:54 remaining, James hit a layup in traffic to tie the game. James then deflected a pass to Pierce, raced down the floor, received an Eric Snow pass at the free-throw line and threw down a slam dunk over West to put the Cavaliers up 92-90 with 1:23 left. Damon Jones made 1-of-2 free throws with 26.4 seconds remaining and James blocked a West 3-point attempt in the closing seconds. James was outscored by Pierce 17-6 in the fourth quarter and missed a potential game-winning layup in the closing seconds of the first overtime before redeeming himself in the second overtime. "This is a team win, but it goes back to LeBron James coming up big for us," Brown said. "He's a heck of a player and he definitely helped us get this win tonight." Game notes The Cavaliers won in Boston for just the second time in 14 tries. ...James has eight career triple-doubles. ... West was selected to replace Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson on the sophomore team in the 2006 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge. Nelson will miss the game with a sprained right foot. ...The Celtics haven't won more than two consecutive games this season. ...The Celtics are 2-1 with Gomes in the starting lineup. Tracy McGrady 43pts vs Jermaine O'Neal Pacers 03/04 NBA Jermaine O'Neal had 25 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to help the Indiana Pacers overcome a 43-point performance by Tracy McGrady in a 114-107 victory over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. McGrady made eight 3-pointers and shot 14-of-27, but he didn't have the support O'Neal had for Indiana. O'Neal was one of six Pacers in double figures as they won their sixth in a row. The 114 points were a season high for the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers, who also got a little payback for an embarrassing home loss to the Magic on Dec. 17, 2003. The difference? McGrady was one of five Magic players in double figures that night, but he was Orlando's primary offensive threat Tuesday. McGrady dominated the opening minutes of the second quarter, scoring 15 of Orlando's first 17 points, including 13 in a row. After McGrady's free throws with seven minutes to play brought the Magic within six, 43-37, the Pacers responded with runs of 17-6 and 8-0 that pushed their lead to 18. It was more of the same in the third quarter. McGrady scored Orlando's first 12 points to pull the Magic back within six. He went scoreless for the final seven minutes of the period, however, and the Pacers took a 94-81 lead into the fourth. The Magic got as close as seven in the final period on Rod Strickland's layup with 7:38 to play. Ron Artest, who scored 23 points, helped hold them off with seven points down the stretch, including a fast-break dunk that made it 114-103 with less than a minute to play. O'Neal played much of the game with a sore left ankle. He rolled it on Juwan Howard's foot in the second quarter and had to go to the locker room to get it taped. He scored 10 points in the first quarter to help Indiana build a 33-18 lead. The game seemed out of place for the sluggish, defensive-minded Eastern Conference. Orlando scored 33 fast-break points, and both teams shot 50 percent from the field. Al Harrington had 19 points, Jamaal Tinsley had 16, including four 3-pointers, Reggie Miller scored 11 and Jeff Foster added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Indiana. Howard had 19 points for Orlando, which lost its fifth in a row. Game notes Pacers G Anthony Johnson played 14 minutes off the bench after missing four games with an abdominal strain. ... Orlando coach Johnny Davis got a technical foul with 4:42 to play in the second quarter for arguing. ... Indiana's 69 first-half points were a season high for points in a half. ... Indianapolis Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt sat courtside at the game and obliged a long line of autograph seekers at halftime. Michael Jordan 21pts vs NY Knicks Final NBA Home Game 02/03 The sting of losing, punctuated by some harsh words from the coach, overshadowed everything at Michael Jordan's final home game. Jordan received a U.S. flag from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and had some computers donated to public schools in his name, but coach Doug Collins ripped Jordan's Washington Wizards teammates following Monday's 93-79 loss to the New York Knicks. "I've had guys curse at me in the locker room this year, show no respect,'' Collins said. "It was insidious.'' Collins paid tribute to Jordan for stepping in when other players showed disrespect. The coach also said there could be a roster purge this offseason of players who failed to show the proper regard for the coach. He didn't name any specific players. "It won't happen next year. Trust me. I treat people with dignity. I expect the same thing in return,'' Collins said. Jordan, who blasted his teammates' work ethic several times this season, supported Collins. He will get a chance to do something about it if he returns to the Wizards' front office after the season. "It's definitely a concern,'' Jordan said. "It's a thing we have to address.'' Jordan had others reasons to be upset. His playing career is ending with a five-game home losing streak, and the Wizards, who finish their season Wednesday night at Philadelphia, will end up at least six games under .500. "Some people believe I prohibited this group from growing up,'' Jordan said. "I'm not buying that. Next year's going to be a test for some of these guys to understand at 40 years old what I gave to the game the last two years.'' The other Wizards were blindsided by Collins' comments. Second-year player Kwame Brown, a major disappointment since being drafted No. 1 overall, was denying everything even before reporters could finish their questions. "No, that didn't happen. Didn't happen. I don't know what you're talking about,'' Brown said. "Problems between me and Doug? No, there's nothing there. He can't be talking about me because I never said that. I'm a straight shooter, I'll tell somebody if I felt that way.'' Brown cursed at Collins during the Wizards' game at Phoenix on March 21. Nearly lost in all the post-game anxiety was the spectacle of Jordan's last home appearance. It started when Rumsfeld, who received a loud ovation, presented Jordan with a flag that flew over the Pentagon on the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The two shook hands and chatted briefly, and Jordan cradled the flag in his right hand with his head bowed as the national anthem played. Jordan received a mild pre-game ovation when the starting lineups were announced, then had 21 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes. Allan Houston scored 23 points to lead the Knicks, who tied the Wizards for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. Jordan come out firing, taking nine shots in the first quarter, but he once again he couldn't make the difference on a team with uneven talent and questionable chemistry. In the fourth quarter, typically Jordan-time, he scored just two points and left the game for good with 2:02 to play. "Michael can't carry a subpar team to the playoffs at age 40,'' Collins said. "If Michael were 25, we would have made the playoffs. This team never mixed; it never fit.'' As Jordan sat, the MCI Center crowd rose to its feet and cheered and chanted for 2 minutes, 45 seconds. Afterward, Wizards owner Abe Pollin donated 50 computers to each of Washington's 18 public high schools in Jordan's name. Jordan had tried not to make a big deal out of the game, saying beforehand it was "just another night.'' "It seemed like more of a circus the last time we played them in New York,'' Houston said. "And that was on our home court.'' Although he couldn't produce a winning record, Jordan brought national exposure and big profits to the Wizards, who shattered attendance records over the last two seasons. All 82 home games in the 20,000-seat arena were sellouts, averaging 5,000 more fans per game than in the season before Jordan returned. The last time Jordan played a home game that wasn't a sellout was Nov. 20, 1987, when he was with the Chicago Bulls. The Wizards presented a video tribute at halftime, showing a full range of highlights and emotions on and off the court from Jordan's 15-year career and six NBA titles. Game notes While it was Jordan's last home game for the Wizards, it wasn't his last game in a Wizards uniform. The Wizards wore their 1978 throwback Bullets uniforms for their last three home games; they lost all three. ... Gilbert Arenas 54pts vs Steve Nash 42pts Suns NBA 06/07 The Phoenix Suns went from snowed in to snowed under by Gilbert Arenas -- and their franchise-best 15-game winning streak is history. Arenas capped a 54-point night by banking in a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 30.7 seconds left in overtime and the Wizards beat the Suns 144-139 on Friday night. He didn't call bank, he said, but wasn't surprised it went in. "The way I was going," Arenas said, "I knew it was good." The Wizards have snapped the two longest winning streaks in the league this season, earlier ending Dallas' 11-game string with a victory in Washington. "That just goes to show you how talented we are," the Wizards' Caron Butler said. Arenas' output was the second-most points ever scored against Phoenix. Only Wilt Chamberlain scored more, 66 for the Lakers in February 1969 in the Suns' first season. "He wants to win," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "He wants to show he's going to be one of the greatest of all time." Steve Nash matched his career high with 42 points and had 12 assists, and Shawn Marion added 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns, who rallied from 15 points down in the second half to send the game into overtime. But Butler scored 10 of his 34 -- one shy of his career best -- in the extra session to help Washington to its eighth victory in 10 games. The Suns arrived a little over two hours before tipoff after being snowed in for two nights in Denver, and couldn't quite overcome an offensive onslaught by Arenas that brought an end to the NBA's longest winning streak in seven seasons. "It's obviously not ideal to be on a bus for three hours and on a plane and come straight to the arena not smelling our best and not in our pressed linens," Nash said. "But that's the hand we were dealt. Maybe that did us in a bit tonight." Arenas started the Wizards' four-game western trip with a career-high 60 points against the Lakers and wrapped it up with his second-best career output. He converted a three-point play after he was fouled on a running one-handed 9-foot bank shot to tie it at 127 with 20.9 seconds to play in regulation. Nash missed a 3-pointer, then Marion and Amare Stoudemire missed rebound attempts and the game went into overtime. "We had our chances," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said, "and didn't get it done in regulation. You have to give Gilbert Arenas credit. He made some big shots." Arenas, admittedly carrying a grudge after being cut from the U.S. team for this year's world championships, pounded his chest and appeared to stare into the stands at Jerry Colangelo several times after making big plays. Colangelo, the Suns' chairman and ex-owner, is the head of USA Basketball. He also stared down D'Antoni after sinking a 37-footer at the first-quarter buzzer. But Arenas said he was not upset with D'Antoni and insisted he didn't even know Colangelo was in the building. "When you're on fire, you're on fire," Arenas said of his showmanship. "We've shown the world that we can compete with these good teams out here." In a game that resembled the Suns' 161-157 double-overtime thriller at New Jersey on Dec. 7, Arenas was 21-of-37 from the field, 6-of-12 on 3-pointers. The sixth of Nash's seven 3-pointers -- in 15 attempts -- tied it at 134 with 1:20 left in overtime, but Butler scored inside to put Phoenix ahead 136-134 1:04 from the finish. Phoenix took a 131-128 lead early on the overtime on Stoudemire's inside basket, but he missed the free throw for what would have been a three-point play, then Arenas sank a 22-footer to cut it to 131-130. Butler's eight-footer put Washington up 139-134 with 30.7 seconds to go. The lead changed hands 10 times in a torrid 4-minute span in the fourth quarter before Marion's 12-footer put Phoenix ahead 119-117 with 2:14 to play. After Stoudemire blocked Butler's shot, Nash made two free throws to boost it 121-117 with 1:59 left. Jarvis Hayes sank a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 123-122 with 1:04 left, then Stoudemire's reverse stuff made it 125-122. Arenas made two free throws to cut it to 125-124 with 36.6 seconds to play. Nash sank two more free throws to boost the lead to 127-124 with 23.9 seconds left. The Suns had to take a three-hour bus ride to Colorado Springs to meet their charter flight back home on Friday. They arrived at U.S. Airways Center at 6:15 p.m., 2 hours and 15 minutes before tipoff. Vince Carter 42pts winning shot vs Nuggets 01/02 NBA Vince Carter would not be outdone by Nick Van Exel or Ryan Bowen. After making sure the game reached overtime, Carter drilled a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining in the extra session, giving the Toronto Raptors a 98-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets. In a contest featuring two of NBA's top six scorers, it looked like Van Exel would get the best of Carter following a scintillating second-half performance. Van Exel went scoreless in the opening half before scoring 27 points after intermission. He had 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of free throws that gave Denver an 87-84 lead with 4.3 seconds remaining. But Carter came through, with a little help. Double-teamed in the corner, Carter was fouled by George McCloud attempting a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation. An 80 percent foul shooter, Carter sank three straight shots to force the extra session. "Their whole bench was talking, but I was able to throw them off by smiling," Carter said. "It's tough after you get two because then it's the most important one. It all seemed like it was in slow motion. By midway, I knew it was good." Van Exel had a chance to win it in regulation and appeared to get bumped by Alvin Williams while trying a 3-pointer as time expired. But the officials failed to call it, and Van Exel and coach Dan Issel just shook their heads in disgust. Afterward, Van Exel, who has a history of run-ins with referees, had some choice words for the NBA. "The NBA wants us to respect the officials but they have to respect the players," Van Exel said. "It's a two-way street. The bottom teams, we want a fair shake. I didn't see that happening tonight. The NBA needs to look at this game to see if we got a fair shake." "I feel like we should've won the game. We definitely had some calls that didn't go in our favor," McCloud said. "They made a call that was a deciding factor in the game and didn't make it on the other end." In a back-and-forth overtime, Bowen made his only basket of the game in acrobatic fashion to give Denver a 96-95 lead with 5.4 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Carter pulled up over James Posey along the right wing and sank another 3-pointer to give Toronto the lead for good. "You take it any way you could get it," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Vince stepped up really big. He hit big shots. We went to him at the end of the game and he delivered." Denver nearly won in dramatic fashion. On the inbounds pass, McCloud made a beautiful lob from the right side to Raef LaFrentz, who went up over Carter. But his drop shot rattled in and out as time expired. "Vince got a finger on it, but I still have to convert that," LaFrentz said. Carter finished with 42 points -- seven in overtime -- and matched a career high with 15 rebounds for Toronto, which gained a split of the season series. Van Exel, among the league leaders in shots per game at 23.1, missed his only four shots in a scoreless first half as the Nuggets trailed, 48-36. Carter had 18 points in the opening half. But Van Exel's trigger finger started to warm up in the third quarter as he made 3-of-8 shots. The volatile point guard saved his best for the fourth quarter. Van Exel tried to will his team to victory in the final period and made two foul shots with 6:54 remaining, giving Denver its second lead of the contest at 74-72. After Carter made two foul shots to give the Raptors an 82-80 lead with 1:22 left, Van Exel scored his club's final seven points of regulation. But Carter, who went 13-of-30 from the field, spoiled the effort by converting at the line to send the game into overtime. Van Exel made 9-of-24 shots, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. As a team, Denver went 8-of-14 from beyond the arc. "Nick was tremendous in the second half. That was why we were able to come back and make a game of it," Issel said. In the overtime, Van Exel was called for traveling with 1:24 left. After Toronto's Chris Childs missed a 3-pointer, McCloud gave the Nuggets the lead back with a shot from beyond the arc with 35 seconds left. Carter drove the baseline and scored over LaFrentz to give the Raptors the lead before Bowen's basket put Denver in front for the last time. LaFrentz scored 16 points and Scott Williams matched a season high with 16 for Denver, which shot 40 percent (37-of-91) and was in the game despite getting outrebounded, 58-43. Carter led the charge on the boards for Toronto and Keon Clark, starting in place of Antonio Davis (sore left knee) added 12 with 16 points. Alvin Williams scored 17 points for Toronto, which shot just 38 percent (36-of-94). Michael Jordan 2002: 40pts vs Cavaviers at Age 39 NBA Legend Michael Jordan scored 40 points as the Washington Wizards snapped a two-game losing streak and surpassed last season's win total with a 94-85 victory over the hapless Cleveland Cavaliers. In the second half of the previous two games, Jordan was held to a combined nine points on 3-of-23 shooting, fueling speculation that the combination of his age and heavy minutes was causing fatigue. But the 38-year-old Jordan did look not fatigued against the Cavaliers, who suffered their 11th straight loss. After scoring 24 points in the first half, he added 12 in the third quarter, when Washington outscored Cleveland, 29-17, to take control. It marked the fourth time this season Jordan scored 40 or more points. He finished 18-of-29 from the field in 40 minutes. "A lot of people have been saying that I am physically tired and I don't think that is the case," Jordan said. "I just think that the teams we have been playing -- Minnesota and Philadelphia -- made adjustments at halftime and I think we hadn't been able to adjust to their adjustments. "Physically, I felt fine and tonight I felt fine, too," Jordan continued. "I don't think that Cleveland made the adjustments the last two teams made." Chris Whitney added 15 points for Washington, which climbed back to .500 at 20-20. Last season, the Wizards finished 19-63, the worst mark in franchise history. Whitney made three 3-pointers -- all in the first half -- to tie Tracy Murray's all-time franchise record of 410. The Cavaliers took a 54-51 lead on Brian Skinner's dunk with 9:51 left in the third period. Jordan took matters into his own hands, scoring six points in an 8-0 run that gave Washington a 59-54 edge with 7:50 to play. "I am going to take the blame for Michael's last two second halves," Washington coach Doug Collins said. "I knew what they (opponents) were doing and I was telling him, but I didn't give him any help." Jordan's dunk and Popeye Jones' three-point play staked the Wizards to their first double-figure cushion, 70-60, with 3:05 left. "I thought Michael was outstanding," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "We did a lot of things to help, and I thought he just did a whole lot of things that were very effective, especially shot the ball extremely well. He was pretty up tonight." Jordan had plenty of motivation, recalling how poorly the Wizards played in a 94-75 loss at Cleveland on November 27. "They dominated us in their arena and I just felt that we wanted to come out and exert what we are capable of doing physically," he said. "I certainly didn't want them to play well against us." Washington led by as many 13 points before Jumaine Jones drilled a 3-pointer with two seconds left to bring the Cavaliers within 77-67 enter the final quarter. "In the third quarter, we couldn't come out and hit shots," Lucas said. "We went from shooting 53 percent all the way down to shooting 43, and that really, really bothered us." After Jordan opened the fourth quarter by following in Tyrone Nesby's miss, the Wizards went cold, managing just two points over the next 4 1/2 minutes. But the Cavaliers could not take advantage, registering just six points in the first half of the period, all by Zydrunas Ilgauskas. "We had so many guys do a great job tonight," Collins said. "That is what we want. Basically, our guys just didn't want to lose the game tonight. They recognized the importance of it and did whatever it took." Wesley Person scored 19 points for the Cavaliers, but had just three after the first quarter. Person matched Jordan in the first quarter, when each put on a show with 16 points. But the Cleveland swingman was just 1-of-7 after making eight of his first nine shots. "They stayed up on him and then we missed some looks for him," Lucas said. "They never left him anymore. They were making other people score." A jumper by Ilgauskas made it 81-73 with 7:33 left, but the Wizards put away the contest with a 7-1 spurt. Washington opened an 88-74 lead on Whitney's jumper with 4:57 to go. Rookie Brendan Haywood scored 11 points off the bench for the Wizards, who allowed just 35 points in the second half. "Our big guys did a great job in the post," Collins said. "I told our guys at halftime we would win this game on defense." Jumaine Jones contributed 13 points while Andre Miller and Ilgauskas added 11 apiece for the Cavaliers, who are 1-11 in 2002.
