EAA Airventure Oshkosh 2007 P-51 Mustangs start and taxi Nearly 9 minutes of multiple Merlin engines! It started to blow and rain heavily and the air show was canceled. The jerkiness was the result of my attempt to keep my camera from getting wet from rain coming in sideways. I'm surprised they proceeded as far as they did considering the inbound weather. Enjoy! Emperor of the North clip hobos grease the rails spinning from emperor of the north. This clip is intriguing in many ways. First off it illustrates how a steam locomotive doesn't "stall" per say rather they spin out. This is because a reciprocating steam engine makes its maximum torque at zero RPM. in other words the closer and closer it comes to "stalling" the more torque it produces thus instead abruptly quiting, the torque exceeds the rail adhesion and the wheel spins. Now mind you in a railroad application the power is transmitted from a smooth steel wheel to a smooth steel rail. The coefficient of friction leaves a lot to be desired. Imagine what it would be like driving an automobile with its excellent coefficient of friction (rubber tires on an asphalt surface) with the torque/stall characteristics of a steam engine! EAA Airventure 2007 P-38 Lightning startup 12 into 1 This is a short clip of a P-38 lightning. The aircraft was heading out to do a photo shoot, but traffic meant that there was 30 minute wait, so they canceled it. I got what I wanted though: the distinctive sound of the turbocharged Allison engines. I do enjoy the sound of Merlins and non turbocharged engines but the 12 into 1 pipes gives the engine a mean rumble. A Merlin engine similar in character to a top fuel V8 they both have individual exhaust stacks. On the other hand a turbo allison is akin to v8s used on the sports car racing circuit; Corvettes, Aston Martins and the like. Side note- There was a ramp/step stool that i asked to stand on so I could get some footage of the turbines spinning but I didn't ask right away and I never got a chance because they didn't start her up again. (it started raining) --Note it has been brought to my attention that this is not a "K" model. The "K" was a prototype that featured paddle bladed propellers. She is actually a F-5 photo recon model.
