Avoid "You should..." statements and generalizations and globalizations of any kind. • Be open to new ideas. New ideas or techniques may be utilized or suggested today. Be open to considering new information and incorporating new practices. • Ask questions. Please feel free to ask any question that comes up without fear that it is to "silly" or "stupid". Make sure to phrase all questions in respectful and value-neutral ways. • Respect confidentiality. Please make sure any personal information given in the room stays in the room. When sharing personal anecdotes, make sure to avoid using the real names of other people. • Respect commitments. While you are encouraged to take care of your personal needs throughout the training, please honor your commitment to being here by observing time guidelines during breaks, turning off beepers and phones, and limiting unnecessary interruptions. • Respect time constraints. While we encourage you to express your opinions or ask any pertinent questions, please respect the fact the training is run on a tight schedule, and we might have to redirect or stop a conversation in order to make sure everybody leaves fully trained to be an ally. GLSEN's 2005 National School Climate Survey Sheds New Light on Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Students Key Findings of the 2005 National School Climate Survey include: 75. 4% of students heard derogatory remarks such as "faggot" or "dyke" frequently or often at school LGBT students were five times more likely to report having skipped school in the last month because of safety concerns than the general population of students. The average GPA for LGBT students who were frequently physically harassed was half a grade lower than that of LGBT students experiencing less harassment (2.6 versus 3.1). Students in schools with a GSA were likely to feel like they belonged at their school than students in schools with no such clubs. Having a comprehensive policy was related to a lower incidence of hearing homophobic remarks and to lower rates of verbal harassment. Students at schools with inclusive policies also reported higher rates of intervention by schoo$l staff when homophobic remarks were made. * Information about methodology and demographics, as well as full results, are available online at www.glsen.org The effects of oppression differ for specific target and agent groups, in the end everyone loses. Homophobia and transphobia prevent some lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people from developing an honest self-identity, and add to the pressure to marry and/or have children, which places undue stress on themselves and their families.
