MP3 Experiment Five: The Epic Battle - September 27, 2008 From the MP3 Experiment 5, an epic battle took place on Governor's Island. About 1,000 people gathered for the Improv Everywhere event. We all had an MP3 file on a portable player, we were all listening to it simultaneously for the first time. In the audio we heard the voice of Steve, giving us instructions to follow. For the event we were asked to wear a certain color shirt, and to bring an umbrella and a balloon. After a few exercisizes, we seperated into two separate brigades, and then engaged in battle. Zhu Yiyong at 798 Avant Gallery - September 18, 2008 To quote the artist: "To my generation and also my parents the red star was sacred. It would never be allowed to be painted imperfect and be used for a game. But to the younger generation, many of my students, it doesn't mean the same thing. To them the star is only part of a story, but to my generation it was part of our daily experience." To me, Zhu's work underscores many aspects of China's emergence in the world of contemporary art. The artist grew up during the era of the Cultural Revolution, yet he has found certain Western sensibility in his ability to address differences in perceptions of culture that are present in his own surroundings. On the surface, I find most enjoyable the way he can capture the look of joy and wonder in a child's face. Also, in this video, we get a rare chance to see me exercising my hidden talent as a yo-yo player - I made red stars with my yo-yo strings! Ma Ye at China Previews Gallery - September 4, 2008 Ma Ye's work evokes imagery prior to revolutionary change, with peaceful pastoral settings. His depictions of women are a satirical play on the stereotypes created by foreigners - he pushes the stereotype by having the female figures lift their skirts in a flirty gesture. In this manner we are given insight into the artist's sense of humor, a way of poking fun at the typical western mindset. On the surface, Ma Ye uses a consistant soothing combination of soft blue in a very modern form. This, taken into consideration with the artist's educational background ( Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, class of '88 ) demonstrates a very keen understanding of contemporary art overall. Andres Serrano at Yvon Lambert - September 4, 2008 In this show, titled "SHIT", Serrano has created large chromogenic prints from photographs of various types of excrement. Anyone familiar with the artist will immediatly think of his most well known work, "Piss Christ" (a print of which is also on display in this exhibition), and will recognize that Serrano is no stranger to working with bodily substances. On the surface, of course, the subject matter can be evocative, as we are naturally conditioned to think of feces as something dirty and disgusting, something to be disposed of. After all, the term shit itself is a vulgar word. But the fact is, feces are a perfectly natural thing that every animal creates, and further it is created from within. In nature, animals typcially leave scat out in the open, where it can be examined for the study of animal behaviour. So, with these photographs we are invited to examine the sometimes beautiful forms that can arrise from this activity. The quality of Serrano's compositions highlights the unique forms and shapes that come about from that lowest of all creation, shit. Sculpture Space at EFA, September 5, 2008 Group show featuring Abraham Ferraro, Jae Hi Ahn, David Bowen, Carlos Ferguson, Wennie Huang, Takafumi Ide,Las Hermanas Iglesias, Beth Krebs, David McQueen, Sterz, Jina Valentine, Maria Velasco. These artists have recently participated in residencies at the Sculpture Space in Albany, NY. The show takes place at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts gallery in New York City. Among the highlights of the show for me was seeing the output of Abe Ferraro's Stationary Climber, and elaborate construction that allows the artist to climb an artificial rock wall which moves in sync with the climber, making the climber appear stationary. The entire apparatus is attached to a jig that transfers the climber's motion into a circular drawing. At the show, Abe installed a video of the climber, along with drawings produced in the process. Also, I'm sorry I didn't get it on video, Maria Velasco created cupcakes with ornate script lettering for the attendees to consume. This was a really fun show to see. Shen Jingdong at China Square Gallery - Aug 7, 2008 This show of Shen Jingdong's work, titled "Hero" was curated by Eric C. Shiner. I found the work reminiscent of Hergé (the creator of Tintin). The artist's sensibilities become clear when you understand his background. Trained as an artist at Nanjing Art College, he was later drafted into the military where he was assigned to serve in the Military Drama Troupe. Fly's Eye by Buckminster Fuller at Max Protetch - June 2008 Fuller's Fly's Eye is a typical example of tensegrity in action. Fuller wrote of the Fly's Eye Dome design in 1983, "The basic hardware components will produce a beautiful, fully equipped, air-deliverable house that weighs and costs about as much as a good automobile." He emphasized the structure's potential to harness passive solar energy and natural wind ventilation. In this video, we first see a small model of it in the gallery, then a full-size instatllation in New York's Laguardia Place. I love the way that Laguardia's statue seems to be hailing it! Also, in the video we see Fuller's Rowing Needle, and concept drawings of the Dymaxion Car. Bubble Battle in Times Square - June 21, 2008 I went to the Bubble Battle and died a soapy death. This wonderful, silly, fantastic event was organized by newmindspace.com Just a sample of how great life can be in New York City. Hundreds and hundreds of adult children gathered in Times Square and released a hurricane of soap bubbles - what a mess! The best part was the bewildered tourists and passersby trying to figure out what we were protesting or demonstrating about. Why is it whenever a bunch of people gather does it have to be a protest? Can't we just get together and have fun? Tags: Bubble Battle Times Square New York City NYC soap bubbles newmindspace fun flash mob yoyopro |

Margaret Leng Tan performs SweetChinoiserie by Guy Klucevsek Performed at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts on May 31, 2008 Renowned accordianist/composer Guy Klucevsek adapted the toy instrumental suite, Sweet Chinoiserie for Margaret Leng Tan from his Chinoiserie, a music-theater collaboration with Ping Chong & Company. Soundwise and visually, it is one of the most colorful works in her toy repertory, drawing on an arsenal of kitchen and toy percussion and other toy instruments such as the melodica and of course, the toy accordion. The title of the suite's third movement, The Mark of a Hero, is a nod to the brand name of her toy accordion. Liu Zhang at 798 Avant Gallery - May 15, 2008 Renowned photographer, Liu Zhang, born in Hebei Province, currently living and working in Beijing. Note the fantastic use of black and white composition as he captures the landscape of modern China. I think in many ways it parallels the landscape of the USA in the 1930's, the effects of rapid development, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, coal mining, rural entertainment - in many ways and in many aspects, Liu Zhang has captured a moment in a nation's history. Lee Bul at Lehmann Maupin - May 8, 2008 Widely recognized as one of the leading Korean artists of her generation, Lee will present an installation of sculptural works, along with related studies and drawings, comprising a wide range of materials, visual elements, and references. Anchoring the exhibition is a large, grotto-like sculpture entitled Bunker -- M. Bakhtin. The work invites visitors inside to experience what the artist describes as a "sonic simulacrum" of architectural spaces and landscapes; interwoven is a layered narrative of modernity and historical memory emerging from the complex relationship between Korea and Japan in the 20th century. Situated within a mirrored environment that is at once brilliant and disorienting, Bunker -- M. Bakhtin is paired with an obsessively intricate structure made of glass, crystals, and aluminum suspended in midair—an homage to the visionary Weimar architect Bruno Taut, whose "peculiar fusion of futurist fantasia, utopian manifesto, and private obsessions," in the artist's words, seems to preside over the exhibition as a whole. Other works in the exhibition include wall pieces and a gridded platform on the floor making use of two-way mirrors to create the illusion of fragmentary architectural structures repeating and receding into infinite space.
