| Cal Poly Jazz Band-UNC Greeley Jazz Festival-Mingus Bop Blue The UNC Greeley Jazz Festival is the largest event of its type in America. Its over 4000 participants come from 10 states, Canada, and even Thailand. Here, Dr. Dave Kopplin leads the Cal Poly Pomona Jazz Band in the Charles Mingus (1922-1979) classic, "Better Get Hit in Your Soul". Mr. Mingus was an accomplished bassist AND pianist, as well as a composer, so his charts showcase bass and piano (together, separately, or both) to a great extent. His legendary temper would flare if the bassist or pianist didn't measure up to him or his expectations. In reference to Mr. Mingus' personality, Dr. Kopplin mentions 'going to church' which is how Mr. Mingus would refer to playing alongside him. Featuring Darrell Tung (sax), Jeannette 'Jeena E' Lawler (drums), with Brandon Cordoba (piano) and Capn Craig Tsurumoto (bass) with the important Interplay measures. Jeanette Lawler and James Goese received IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) Soloist Awards for their performances in the Festival. Capn Craig Tsurumoto was awarded the 2008 UNC Greeley Jazz Festival Outstanding Musicianship Award (bass)... based (no pun intended) on this and his other performances. All charts in their set at the UNC Greeley Jazz Festival will be posted. Titled Cal Poly Jazz Band-UNC Greeley Jazz Festival-(feature title).
