The French Connection - "The Chase" After French hitman Nicoli (Marcel Bozzuffi) tries to assasinate New York City detective Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman)and misses, they begin one of movie history's greatest chase scenes through the streets of New York and an elevated train. Hackman, who won an Academy Award for his performance wasn't director Friedkin's first choice. He wanted Jackie Gleason, and then Jimmy Breslin, who as a lifelong New Yorker, didn't drive and would never be able to do the chase scene.
