He made the remarks after talks with German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Beijing. During Friday's meeting, Yang Jiechi said the present sound development momentum in the Sino-German relationship was hard-won and should be doubly cherished. Yang said further development of bilateral ties is conducive to the fundamental interests of the two countries. For his part, Steinmeier said Germany adheres to the one-China policy and counters any attempt to separate China, adding Germany is ready to cooperate with China in wider fields. In addition to reopening strategic dialogue and human rights dialogue, the two sides also agree on starting an exchange program between young diplomats. Steinmeier also extended sympathy and condolences for China's severe loss caused by the massive earthquake in Sichuan province. He said he was deeply impressed by the Chinese people's solidarity in dealing with the disaster. Steinmeier is scheduled to visit quake-hit Dujiangyan city over the weekend, where a German mobile hospital is located. He told Yang Germany would offer more assistance to China.
